Poetry, personal reminis-
cences, Haiku, stories, Yid-
dish poetry and more are
among the creative writing
efforts compiled in a booklet
by the senior adult Writers
Corner at the Jimmy Prentis
Morris Building of the Jewish
Community Center.
The book, the Writers Jour-
nal, features many examples
of the pieces written by the
seniors who meet weekly
under the direction of Pro-
fessor Norma Goldman of
Wayne State University. The
booklet is published in time
for the Jewish Book Fair held
Saturday through Nov. 20 at
the Maple/Drake Jewish
Center.
This year's book fair edition
is in memory of Charles
Driker, a long-time Writers
Corner contributor and
founder of the Jewish Culture
Club. At the same time, the
book is dedicated to Helen
Singer, who works on behalf
of the senior citizens
programs.
The cover was designed by

Housework

GERTRUDE GRAY

It's raining today
A room full of gloom
So do something useful
And pick up the broom.
A day to do housework
Everything is so dusty
Get down on the floor
Or soon you'll get rusty.
So I'm scrubbing away
Perhaps lose some weight
Getting down was so easy
Getting up not first rate.
Oh! Look, there's the sun
To Heck with the gloom
Get out of thekitchen
Put back the old broom.

Have A Heart

SARAH KING

Consider this amazing
organ, the heart; it is the soul
of our life. It weighs a half
pound, the size of a closed fist,
pumping blood through
vessels more than one hun-
dred thousand miles long,
pumping blood ten thousand
times a day.
This organ, with its system
of veins and arteries, is the
source of our vitality and
gives us the ability to
breathe, see, hear, touch,
smell and feel. This small
organ, as it sends the blood
through the brain, is respon-
sible for our ability to laugh,
cry, love, to be kind, con-
siderate and generous.
It is indeed a waste of
energy to hate, be jealous, lie,
cheat, fear and all other
negative activities that create
stress on this small and

precious organ. It is the only
one we have and to abuse it
by smoking, excessive drining
and overeating is indeed
against this God-given gift.
And so, when someone ways
"l'chaim" or "zei gezunt" — it
is indeed the most wonderful
wish anyone can give us. The
rapture of sighing, in
understanding a spoken
word, reading a paragraph,
recognizing a face or even
waking up, that is ecstasy.
We don't have far and wide
to look to find a miracle; all
we have to do is look within
ourselves and be thankful for
our heart.

Flitting About

HELEN SINGER

My mother always referred
to me as her butterfly. I was
always flitting from one thing
or another, finding different
experiences.
That is why, as I flit, I have
a taste of life and savor the ex-
perience like expensive wine
that has a big price tag con-
nected with it. Nothing comes
cheap in life. You pay a price
for everything.
But what a great learning
experience!

A Sure Way
To A Happy Day

ARTHUR LIPSITT

Happiness is something
We create in our mind
It's not something we
search for
And so seldom find
It's giving up thoughts
That breed discontent
And accepting what comes
As a gift Heaven-sent
It's giving up wishing
For things we have not
And making the best of
Whatever we've got
For it's by completing
What we are here to do
That we find real
contentment
And so much happiness, too.
