Heroic Survivor

Continued from Page 63

Alicia fought with Jewish
and Russian partisans. She
hid in the woods and worked
as a peasant in the fields. By
once feigning madness, she
diverted German soldiers

The Jew of Alicia
is wily, clever,
determined to
survive and too
damned hungry for
life not to.

SPECIAL

After the war, Alicia started
an orphanage for Jewish
children in the Polish city of
Bielsko. Most of the orphans
were no older than she: 15.
Impressed by her
resourcefulness, leaders of the
Brecha, the underground
organization that was smug-
gling Jews into Palestine, ask-
ed her to lead several convoys
of Jews to their homeland.

British authorities caught
the group Alicia was leading
as they approached Haifa on
an old cargo ship they had
named the Theodor Herzl.
After eight months in a
British military camp on
Cyprus, she was transferred
to an agricultural school near
Tel Aviv — just before Israel's
War of Independence began.
Alicia served in Israel's navy
during the war, fell in love

from a Jew whom they
suspected — quite correctly —
of being a partisan. She sav-
ed children and she saved en-
tire families. Alicia was, in
fact, able to do more for others
than for her own parents or
brothers.
Alicia was befriended by
Poles, betrayed by Poles. An
old man hid her and other
fugitives from the Nazis in
his cabin in the woods. A far-
ming family gave her food
and a warm coat for the
winter. The superintendent of
an apartment building told
the Germans where she was
hiding.

bullet in the pistol. inex-
plicably, he did not reload.
Instead, he took Alicia to
the SS headquarters in her
hometown of Buczacz where
about 200 other Jews who
had also been rounded up by
the Germans awaited their
fate. The next day, they were
marched to the woods outside
town where a mass grave had
been dug. When the shooting
started, emboldened by her
experiences during the two
years that she had already
spent fleeing from anti-
Semites, Alicia bolted. The
bullets from the infuriated SS
troops never reached her.
