"THE RAMAH EXPERIENCE"

one time is not good for you,"
she said. "We will talk more
later; but for now, try to get
some more sleep."
Every day I ate soup and
bread for breakfast, lunch,
and dinner. I was so hungry,
I could have eaten around the
clock. But I knew the Golds
must have the same dif-
ficulties in getting food as
every other Jewish family in
Poland, and I knew they were
giving me food they could
have eaten themselves.
As I grew stronger, we talk-
ed more and more. They
wanted to know where I had
come from, and how my fami-
ly had been able to survive. I
told them about the deaths of
my three brothers; how my
father had just disappeared
and we believed he, too, was
dead; how Mama, Herzl, and
I peddled goods in the
marketplace for bread and
potatoes.
"Alicia," asked Mr. Gold,
"can you remember when you
first became ill in the
prison?"
"I don't really know exact-
ly when, but it must have
been on the third or fourth
day?'
"Did others become ill at
that time?"
I told him I didn't know, but
that many people had died
during the time I was in the
cell.
"Alicia," Mr. Gold continued
to question me, "did you have
typhoid before you came to
Chortkov prison?"
"I was ill with typhus last
winter, or rather early spring.
Had I been ill with the same
disease again?" I asked him.
"Not exactly; you had
typhoid, which is a little dif-
ferent. But you are well now,"
he added quickly. Mr. Gold
told me that we were ap-
parently given water to drink
that had been contaminated
with disease. _So that was it.
The Germans had given us all
the water we wanted to drink,
which was not in character
for them.
"Did all the people who
came from Buczacz die in
prison?" I asked Mr. Gold.
"No, some were released
and sent back to Buczacz."
I understood it all now; the
Nazis were trying to kill us by
disease too.
I stayed about a month in
Chortkov at the Golds' home.
My health improved, but
slowly. After three weeks I
was finally able to get out of
bed, but I was so weak I could
barely stand. My ear had
begun to heal, and my back
didn't hurt so much, although
it was still very tender. I con-
tinued to wear bandages to
keep my ribs in place and
knew that I would have to
