Send Hanukkah wishes that last longer than eight days. Gold Medal Insurance not look anymore, but slumped my head forward against my chest, my eyes gazing unfocused at the stone floor. Sometime later I felt myself put onto a sack and pulled along the floor. I was pulled roughly down the stone steps, each one jarring my ribs with increasing pain. The pain ac- tually seemed to reawaken my senses, because by the time I reached the cell door I felt more coherent, more con- scious of my surroundings. I was dragged in through the barred door and heard the door clang shut behind me. I awakened early the next morning to the sound of clanking metal and bootsteps. Several Germans had entered the cell and were ordering people to their feet, jabbing at them with the muzzles of their guns. About eight women were pushed outside the cell, and the rest of us were left alone. I tried to pull myself into a sitting position which took me quite a while to do. I had to move very slow- ly so as not to jar my ribs. I could hear sounds coming from the courtyard. There was a small window in our cell but it was too high, so we couldn't look outside. The sounds I heard were terrify- ing. There were the cries of people and shouts in German; but even more chilling, I could also hear snarling dogs. Soon the air was filled with the blended sound of barking dogs and the shrieks of human beings. Some time passed and it became quiet outside. Three women were returned to the cell. Each was dragged in and thrown on the floor; not one had had the strength to walk by herself. Cellmates moved forward to help, but the poor unfortunates cried out at the touch of a hand on their ravaged bodies. Their arms and legs were torn by dog bites. We didn't have to ask about the others; we knew they had died. Two of these survivors also died during the day. Throughout the day, every few hours more people were taken out to the courtyard. Many were torn by the dogs, others were beaten severely. Some were brought back to the cell; many were not. There was very little talking; people were immobilized by fear and suffering. On the third day of my im- prisonment, a German guard brought in a bucket of water and a ladle. "Drink all you want," he told us. "When you want more, call out." The water was cold, with pieces of ice floating in it; we drank it Property & Liability Programs • Health Care • Retail Stores • Eating & Drinking Establishments • Real Estate Owners • Automotive Industry • Communication Industry • Financial Institutions • Lodging Places • Captive Insurance • Specialty Contractors • Manufacturers • Food Processing • Wholesale Distributors • Drug Stores • Metal Workers Programs Heavily Discounted, Flexible Payments . .
