Another source of pressure on the Likud to work together with Labor stems from the ultra-Orthodox camp. Resisting extreme demands from the religious parties may, in the end, be essential to protect the Likud's own long-term political interests. Likud's own constitueny, for most part, would deeply re- sent further religious restric- tions on their day-to-day life. Banning soccer games on Saturday afternoons or movies on Friday evenings would be popular with Or- thodox Israelis who represent some 15 percent of the socie- ty. But the 85 percent who are secular and not very religious would be very upset. The overwhelming majority in Israel, moreover, does not want to further restrict abor- tions. There may have to be some serious bloodletting in the Labor Party before a deal with Likud can be made.
