New Jewish Agenda
Banned In Boston

DAVID HOLZEL

Staff Writer

T

he Boston area's New
Jewish Agenda branch
last month was barred
from membership in the local
Jewish Community Relations
Council. The vote of the
JCRC's trustees was 57-14
against admission.
A majority of the trustees
felt Agenda has no significant
value in the Jewish communi-
ty, one prerequesite for admis-
sion to the 34-member agen-
cy, according to Joel Reck,
JCRC president.
"New Jewish Agenda was
considered outside the
responsible expression of the
Jewish community. The
group is so negative that it
wouldn't be able to play a con-
structive role," Reck said.
Detroit's New Jewish Agen-
da chapter is a member of the
Jewish Community Council,
the equivalent of Boston's
JCRC. "Agenda meets the
Detroit Council's standards,"
said Council Executive Direc-
tor David Gad-Harf.
"People were badly misin-
formed about us" before the
JCRC vote, said 'Ibm Rawson,
Boston Agenda's spokesman.
He added that many trustees
favored the group's inclusion
although they disagree with
Agenda's positions.
"I am not in favor of NJA's
outlook on life, but as a com-
munity we try to uphold con-
stitutional rights at large,"
JCRC budget committee
chairman Jonathan Lee told
the Boston Jewish Advocate.
"If we pick and choose a
member by whether it agrees
with us, we'll never evolve
and that's a formula for ex-
tinction."

Reck found no irony in his
organization's ostricizing a
group whose positions on the
Middle East — including
favoring Israel's negotiation
with the Palestine Liberation
Organization and a Palesti-
nian state — are within the
mainstream of Israeli public
opinion. Agenda never
focuses on Israel's positive
side, he said.

Italy Bars
Nazi Widow

Rome (JTA) — Describing
herself in an open letter as "a
63-year-old woman that
Italian democracy has no
reason to fear," the widow of
Nazi war criminal Herbert
Kappler has appealed to
President Francesco Cossiga
to allow her to enter Italy.
Annaliese Kappler, a resi-
dent of West Germany, is pro-
moting a book she wrote
about her late husband, an
SS colonel accused of wartime
atrocities.
An order barring her from
entering Italy was issued Oct.
18 by Interior Minister An-
tonio Geva. He acted on the
advice of Foreign Minister
Giulio Andreotti.
She had planned to launch
the Italian edition of her book
at a news conference here on
Oct. 20. The date coincided
with solemn observances, by
Italian Jews and former
resistance fighters, of the
50th anniversary of the racial
laws promulgated by
Mussolini's fascist regime.
Excerpts from the book
published in Italian
newspapers left little doubt
that it is an apologia for Kap-
pler and for the Nazi occupa-
tion of Italy in general.
