SOLOMON ACROSS FROM THE LEONARD STEIN Bella Hordes Bella Hordes, widow of "Mister JNF"William Hordes, died Nov. 1 at age 90. From 1940 until the death of her husband, Mrs. Hordes shared her husband's local and national involvements in the Jewish National Fund and in Zionist causes. She became known as the "JNF hostess" and the Hordes' home became a welcoming place for leaders in Zionism. She was an organizing force in Pioneer Women (now Na'amat) and in Labor Zionist ranks. In the past 20 years, even during her recent il- lness, she campaigned for the Israel equivalent of the Red Cross, the Magen David Adom. A JNF forest in Israel and other honors were bestowed on Mrs. Hordes and her hus- band in recognition of their generosity in a variety of causes. Mrs. Hordes took special pride in the halutziut (pioneering) and aliyah of her son, Herbert, who settled first in pre-state Israel as a stu- dent at the Thchnion, inter- rupting his studies to have a share in the action during Israel's War of Independence, continuing his residence after his military service. Mrs. Hordes is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Edward (Evelyn) Wishetsky; two sons, Earl and Herbert of Israel; eight grandchilden and six great-grandchildren. Speculation Continues On Columbus' Pedigree Tel Aviv (JTA) — Specula- tion over Christopher Colum- bus has been alive since the 1930s, when the Spanish scholar, Salvador de Madriaga, made a case for it. Could Columbus have been of Jewish ancestry? There are grounds to • believe so, said Italy's am- bassador to Israel, Alberto Leoncini Bartoli, who spoke to the opening of the Colum- bus Exhibition at the Na- tional Maritime Musuem in Haifa Saturday. Bartoli admitted that "nothing is settled" about Columbus' origin. But "there might be something in the claim" that he was Jewish, the envoy said. He noted that Columbus' mother, "a daughter of the Fontanarosa family, was nam- ed Susanna, which is a Jewish name." The Italian port city of Genoa claims him as a native son and will celebrate the 500th anniversary of his voyage of discovery in 1992. The envoy invited Israel to participate. So has Spain, under whose auspices Columbus sailed. Spain is planning a year- long celebration of the event, which coincides with the 500th anniversary of the ex- pulsion of Jews from that country. Spain will also be highlight the contributions made by Jews to Spanish culture and history. Could Columbus have been one of them? Some scholars have pointed out that his family name, Colon, was one used by Marranos — Jews 15751 W. Lincoln Dr. Palestinians Export To E.C. Brussels (JTA) — A new trade era will begin at the end of this month when the first direct export of Palesti- nian agricultural produce from the West Bank and Gaza Strip reach the European market, European Communi- ty sources said Tuesday. The initial consignment of 6,000 tons, mainly grapefruit grown in Gaza, will go to im- porters in West Germany, Bri- tain, Holland and Denmark. A total of 16,000 tons of fruits and vegetables from the Israeli-administered ter- ritories is expected under a contract between Israel, the Palestinian exporters and the E.C. Until now, exports from the territories had to be marketed through Agrexco, the official Israel government export agency. Israel was reluctant to allow Palesti- nians to export their goods independently. But Israel, bowing to pressure from the E.C. Ex- ecutive Commission and the Parliament of Europe, agreed to allow direct Palestinian exports. Israel was forced to make that concession so that the E.C.'s Strasbourg-based legislative body would ratify three trade protocols that Israel signed with the 12 member-states over a year ago. $345.00 PER SPACE Exclusively Serving Our Jewish Community and Featuring The Gardens of WHILE THE CEMETERY DEVELOPS, PRICES WILL CONTINUE TO RISE!
