This is erosive to public support for Soviet Jewry in a way that all other positive actions cannot correct. We call upon them to exhibit true leadership and totally disassociate them- selves from these events. As of this date (Nov. 4), the Jewish Community Council has announced no decision to leaflet on Nov. 15. We call upon all who care about the cause of Soviet Jewry to join us at the performance that Tuesday night, beginning at 7 p.m. to demonstrate our concern. As long as Jews are denied free emigration, cultural ex- pression, the ability to freely practice their religious beliefs, and are victimized by Soviet anti-Semitism, we must continue to be their voice, a clear, unequivocal and united voice, exerting all legitimate means on their behalf. It is not appropriate to support Soviet culture when Jewish culture culture in the USSR is still under attack. Sol P. Lachman President, Friends of Soviet Jewry Education and Information Center Zogby Should Have Begun At Beginning I read with a great deal of interest James Zogby's opi- nion piece in the Oct. 28 issue. He writes: "The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is now 21 years old." Why does not Mr. Zogby begin at the beginning? In 1948, a state for Arab Palesti- nians was absorbed by Jor- dan. Where were the demonstrations then? Would any of the seven countries he claims descendency from allow him to write an adverse article in their papers? If indeed, he does not agree with some policies of these countries, why does not he start there with criticism? In what Arab paper in this area could a Jew be privileged to write an ar- ticle as Mr. Zogby was privileged to do in The Jewish News? Lottie Halperin Oak Park Ethiopian Jews Continued from Page 7 taining their ancient and rich Jewish heritage. There are no rich Jews among them, no business- trained Jews, no in- termediary with government officials to assist. Those left are mostly women, children and the elderly, and without exception they are the poorest of the poor. No Jewish community has ever survived or recovered under such ominous condi- tions. And this one, despite its 3,000-year antiquity, cannot make it for even another decade. That is why they plead, literally on bended knee, to be saved immediately. That is why they take all kinds of risks, beyond human en- durance, to find a way out. For more than 40 years, the organized Jewish communi- ty's opinion was that only quiet diplomacy would bring salvation to the Ethiopian Jews. Little happened. Minimal numbers arrived in Israel. It was not until after 1974, when unceasing pressure from the American Associa- tion for Ethiopian Jews and other grassroots groups was brought to bear on the Jewish establishment, that larger numbers began to move. The issue was constantly presented to Jews in power who had the ability to change the fortunes of Ethiopia's Jews. They eventually responded, demonstrating that when Jews in high office are persuaded to act, they can achieve miracles in saving Jewish lives. Once again, the Jewish world claims it is resorting to strenuous statesmanlike diplomacy to achieve the final exodus of Ethiopian Jewry. If so, the results since 1985 have been abysmal. The ques- tion is whether such over- tures have been undertaken vigorously and persistently. The only evidence is the facts. The numbers coming out of Ethiopia since 1985 are little more than 500. - Only within very recent months has the greater Jewish establishment joined in a more unified commit- ment to these efforts. This expanded approach could redeem a stranded peo- ple. Given the triple threat of war, hunger and disease, Ethiopia's 10,000 Jews stand as the most distressed Jewish community in the world.
