"One thing we hope to do through Book Fair is to con- vince publishers to keep publishing Jewish books," said Mrs. Schneyer. "There are not that many publishers of Jewish children's books, but the number of them are increasing, and it is due to book fairs such as ours." Mrs. Kantor was proud of a news clipping from a Califor- nia Jewish publication writ- ten by an Orange County cor- respndent who attended a Random House reception for Natan Sharansky: "I met five women whose identification cards said they came from the Detroit Jewish Community Center annual book fair. I marveled at a com- munity that would send five people to Anaheim to prepare for a book fair which, if I am not mistaken, your Los Angeles community does not have at all. One of them, it turned out, was sent by the JCC of Detroit in order to line up speakers for their next fair, and the others were volunteers who paid their own way to the ABA (American Bookseller's Association) convention. I was more impressed by this than by seeing David Brinkley who came in to shake hands with -Sharansky." ❑ LOCAL NEWS Serving the community for 32 years. • Jewish," said Mrs. Kantor, "but the book must be. For ex- ample, people expect that the cookbooks will be kosher!" A special program targeted mainly to Book Fair volunteers, but open to the public, is a presentation and cooking demonstration by New York society hostess Helen Nash, on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. She penned Helen Nash's Kosher Kitchen. Volunteers will be treated to lunch, and volunteer readers will present brief synopses of the speakers' books. "We will preview every author who is speaking at Book Fair, and as many other books as is possi- ble to fit in," said Mrs. Silver. "Our volunteers become friends, and it is really like a family. There is a real warmth to it," she said. "We have one volunteer, Joyce Burkoff, who lives in Florida now but is in her 25th year at work on Book Fair. When she is in town she is here three times a week, and when she is in Florida she calls to check on what we are doing." Mrs. Silver said that she and her chairmen are always looking for volunteers and that in- quiries are welcome. Detroit's Jewish Book Fair is the oldest and most respected community book fair in the country. "We have had authors ask to be invited back.
