amn Yankees has a
theme everybody can
relate to and we
thought the World Series
season would be the perfect
time to present it," says direc-
tor/choreographer Patricia
Laing of the Windsor Jewish
Community Centre's produc-
tion, which opens Saturday.
The show, about a middle-
aged baseball fan who sells
his soul to the devil in order
to become a baseball
superstar and win the pen-
nant for the Washington
Senators, opened 33 years ago
in New York. It has been a hit
ever since, playing as recent-
ly as this summer to full
houses at Toronto's Royal
Alexander Theatre.
"Our Centre Theatre
Workshop wanted a play that
was fun to work on and fun to
see," says Bethe Jarcaig, the
group's steering committee
chairman, who calls herself
"head of the complaint
department. Jarcaig's job in-
volves coordinating the
volunteer committees which
are working with profes-
sionals to produce the show.
One of the first tasks was
figuring out how to recruit
people to audition for the
play. Like everything else
associated with the produc-
tion, this challenge was
handled with lighthearted
flair. A reunion party was
staged at which former stars
regaled newcomers with
highlights from past hits.
Once the play was cast, a
happy coincidence became ap-
parent; several of the cast
were from the second genera-
tion of Theatre Workshop per-
formers. For example, 26-year-
old Dan Orman, who plays
the lead as both Old Joe and
Young Joe, is the son of Alan
Orman, who played the lead
in the workshop's production
of Guys and Dolls about 25
years ago. Dan's mother,
Diana, was also in that
production.
The history of the Centre
Theatre Workshop dates
nearly back to the beginning
of the Windsor Jewish Com-

munity Centre, which will
celebrate its 30th anniversary
next spring. The workshop
was active for many years pro-
ducing such hits as Guys and
Dolls, Milk and Honey and
Fiddler on the Roof Four
years ago, it was revived after
a period of hibernation.
Although Damn Yankees is
sure to be a success, profit is
not a priority for the Centre
Theatre Workshop. "Sure, we
don't want to lose money,"
says Jarcaig. "But, our priori-
ty is to get people involved."
"We've found that a lot of
young peple who get involved
in the workshop go on to
assume leadership positions
in other areas of the corn-
