Your Hosts,

The Mid-Michiganer Klez-
mer Band will present its
special brand of traditional
Jewish music and Yiddish
theater and folk songs at 3
p.m. Sunday at the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Building of
the Jewish Community Cen-
ter. Refreshments will be
served at 2 p.m.
The Michiganers have been
playing concerts, weddings
and community events from
their base in East Lansing.
When a position on the facul-
ty of Michigan State Univer-
sity brought Bruce Sagan and
Judy Barlas to Lansing, they
had already decided to form a
klezmer band. Sagan attend-
ed "Klez Kamp" (the Yiddish
Folk Arts Institute run by
YIVO), where he studied
klezmer fiddle and arranging
with members of the Klezmer
Conservatory Bank and other
top kelzmer revival groups.
He is also experienced in-
Romanian and Greek fiddle
styles, two of the traditions
which strongly influenced
Jewish musicians in Eastern
Europe.
Neil Alexander of Ann Ar-
bor gives theatrical inter-
pretations of songs in the
original Yiddish and adds his
trumpet and guitar playing to
the ensemble. He has train-
ing as a cantor and has played
Jewish music for many years,
most recently with the Albu-
querque-based New Shtetl
Band.
Clarinetist Joe Levine has
a B.A. degree in music from
MSU and three years of play-
ing clarinet for the Army
band in WashingtOn, D.C.
Pianist Laura Stein has
played with a New England-
style contra dance band.
The tsimbl, a relative of
the Romanian cymbalom or
American hammered dul-
cimer, will be played by
Barlas. She is a former ex-
ecutive director of Celebra-
tion of Jewish Arts in Ann
Arbor
There is an admission
charge.
