FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 19.88.

The group, headed by Rab-
bi Alexander Schindler, the
UAHC president, will be the
guests of the American am-
bassador.
The group will participate
in the cornerstone-laying of a
new synagogue on the site of
the famed Oranienburger-

strasse synagogue in East
Berlin.
A Reform temple, it was
desecrated on Kristallnacht
and bombed during World
War II. The East German
government has agreed to
allocate money toward its
reconstruction, which will
also house a Jewish museum
and serve as a community
center.
The Reform group will be
the guests of the East Ger-
man parliament and will join
a silent march to the site in
East Berlin where books were
burned by the Nazis.
The entire Jewish popula-
tion of East Germany is
estimated at no more than
3,000. Most of them live in
the capital.
The Reform delegation will
also visit the former Nazi con-
centration camps of Ravens-
bruck and Sachsenhausen
outside Berlin, where Kad-
dish will be recited.

New York (JTA) — The first
official delegation of
American Jewish religious
leaders to visit East Germany
since the end of World War II
will take place next week,
when leaders of American
Reform Judaism will mark
the 50th anniversary of
Kristallnacht in East Berlin.

A group of 50, who will fly
there for a week-long visit,
are members of the board of
trustees of the Union of
American Hebrew Congrega-
tions, the central body of the
Reform movement, it was
reported last Monday.

New York — Adin Stein-
saltz, the rabbi-author-
philosopher-talmudist,
reported in a telephone inter-
view that he has signed an
agreement with Soviet
authorities to establish a
Judaic Studies Center in
Moscow.
The school — which will
award rabbinical ordination,
train cantors and Jewish lay
leaders, and offer public lec-
tures — will open in February
at a yet-unspecified site in
Moscow, he said.
It also will catalogue,
research and electronically
store thousands of ancient
Jewish manuscripts and
other materials now in Soviet
libraries. 1b be funded by the
Soviet government and an
organization under Stein-
saltz's auspices, the center
will operate as an indepen-
dent post-graduate institu-
tion.
Steinsaltz called the center
a visible sign of the Kremlin's
glasnost (openness) policy. "It
is the first crack in the almost
impenetrable wall. We can
begin training a new genera-
tion of persons ready and will-
ing to restore Jewish life," he
said.
The center, if successful,
might serve as the catalyst for
similar institutions in other
Soviet cities and for other
Jewish projects, he said. "This

will help close the gap of at
least two generations that
didn't have any form of
Jewish education."
No sanctioned rabbinical
school has existed in the
U.S.S.R. since the 1917
revolution that brought the
communists to power.

Reform Jews
Defend ACLU

New York — "It is not
necessary to agree with every
position and every policy
adopted by the American
Civil Liberties Union to
assert that membership in it
should be regarded not as a
mark of shame but as a badge
of honor."
The Commission on Social
Action of Reform Judaism
issued this statement last
week in response to what it
called "the effort to make
membership in the American
Civil Liberties Union appear
to be subersive, unpatriotic
and somehow anti-
American!'
The statement called the
ACLU "an organization
whose principles are deep in
our nation's tradition and
spirit!'
