the basic mandate of the ORT
movement — providing a way
for people to help themselves.
At ORT Strasbourg, students
from age 14 and up are given
training so that they will be
able to go into the workforce
and become productive
citizens.
There are three levels of
training — low level tehnical
training, high tech instruc-
tion and college. In the lower
level, students study elec-
tronics, and their job place-
ment rate is between 90 and
100 percent, Sabbah said.
Students in the high tech cur-
riculum study automation
and robotics. About 95 per-
cent find jobs immediately
after graduation. In the col-
lege level, students may
choose from two tracks: com-
puters and robotics or inter-
national commerce, a new
component of the school's
curriculum.
International commerce
students are required to learn
five languages — English,
German, Spanish, Hebrew
and Japanese. They study
economics, importing/expor-
ting and banking. At the end
of the first year, students
must work for three months
in another country and pre-
sent a report in English about
their experiences. Sabbah
said he hoped that American
Jewish firms will be in-
terested in accepting ORT
Strasbourg students. He is
also seeking Jewish host
families.
"These students are the
pride of all of you," Sabbah
told the Michigan Region
members. "They are the pride
of ORT."
