1965, when it (and implicitly
the accusation) was revoked.
"This account gives the
testimony of all involved in
the trial, including the
testimony of women, which
was unusual at that time,"
Mrs. Berger said. "We would
like to have a monograph
published about it, and we've
found a scholar who is in-
terested."
Mrs. Berger said the scholar
is Prof. Ronnie Po-chia Hsia of
the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst,
the author of "The Myth of
Ritual Murder," which was
recently published.
The manuscript is housed
in a special box and keeps the
materials acid-free and
prevents the pages from rub-
bing against anything else.
Such cases and climate con-
trol preserve Yeshiva's collec-
tion of 1,000 rare documents
and 8,000 rare books. The
Trento Manuscript is one of
the oldest in the collection.
Sylvia A. Herskowitz, direc-
tor of the museum, said the
Trento Manuscript would go
on display with other rare
papers early next year.
A significant documentary
on the Trento blood libel was
issued by the Sally Mayer
Foundation of Milan, Italy. It
was entitled "The Burden of
the Valley of Vision," printed
to mark the abrogation of the
Rites of Beatus Simone da
Trento.
This commemorative edi-
tion was prepared by Dr. S. U.
Nahon. It includes a first edi-
tion of Benjamin Min
Ha'anavim's work. The latter
was first printed in Riva di
Trento in 1560, together with
a list of Hebrew volumes
printed by the Jacob Mar-
caria Press in 1558 and 1562.
Included also is an account of
variant readings of material
about the Trento tragedy.
The account of the abroga-
tion of the accusation was
written by Prof. Gemma Volli
of Bologna who is credited
with the "rectification of the
wrongs done to the Jewish
community of Trento five cen-
turies ago."
The Sally Mayer Founda-
tion documentary was releas-
ed in 1966. I published an ac-
count of it under the heading,
"Rare Literary Com-
memorative Works Mark
Abrogation of Trento Blood
Libel? It stated in part:
In a special Chapel of the
Church of S. Pietro in Tren-
to the embalmed body of
the child, with whose
death the Jews had been
charged, was preserved.
Simone was proclaimed a
Beatus and included in the
list of the martyrs of the

Church. For many years
the body of the child was
carried in annual proces-
sions through the streets.
Later this procession took
place only once every 10
years, the last, held in 1955,
being widely attended.
In November 1965,
however, there was no pro-
cession. On Oct. 28 in that
year Alessandro Maria
Gottardi, Archbishop of
Trento, sent a notification
— from Rome where he
was attending the Second
Ecumenical Council — to
the clergy in the Diocese of
Trento, in which the
charge laid against the
Jews in 1945 was declared
as being without founda-
tion. Thereby the rites of
the Beatus Simone came to
and end and the body of
the child was removed
from the Church of S.
Pietro in the city.
The notification was bas-
ed upon an investigation
made by Father V. P.
Eckert, upon the instruc-
tions of the Archbishop, in-
to the circumstances of the
death of the child Simone,
which was published in the
journal Rivist Trentina di
Studi Storici.
This study — the Arch-
bishop's notification
remarks — was conducted
by the learned scholar,
who is expert in works of
this kind .. .

McCloskey Aids
Arab-American
Activism

Phoenix, Ariz. — Former
Rep. Paul McCloskey Jr. (R-
Calif.) called for cutting off
aid to Israel and for greater
Arab-American activism in
the U.S. political system in a
speech to the local chapter of
the American-Arab Anti-Dis-
crimination Committee.
McCloskey was the keynote
speaker of the ADC's third
annual meeting, held here
recently, during which he
reiterated a phrase he has
used frequently in other talks
throughout the country, refer-
ring to Israel as an "outlaw
nation?'
He based his assertion on
Israel's increasing its ter-
ritory "by force," its West
Bank settlements, its "deport-
ing (Palestinians) who have
lived there all their lives" and
its "refusal to sign an anti-
nuclear proliferation treaty."
On the basis of what he call-
ed violations of international
law, McCloskey said U.S. aid
to Israel should be cut off.
