Israel To Give
Out Gas Masks

Tel Aviv (JrA) - Brig. Gen.
Aharon Vardi, chief of civil
defense, said that, as part of
an experiment, gas masks
will be distributed to the
public in two areas. The ex-
periment will begin next
month with residents of
Shlomi in the north and
Ramat Hasharon near Tel
Aviv.
Vardi said the experiment
was in response to reports of
chemical warfare in the Mid-
east. In another development,
the Defense Ministry is con-
sidering for the first time
allowing a commercial manu-
facturer of gas masks and
other anti-chemical equip-
ment to retail its products in
Israel.
The Shaalon Co. produces
gas masks, safety devices for
infants and medical syringes.
It exports and sells them to
the army, but until now has
never sold directly to the
Israeli public.

Moscow (JTA) - Gennady
Gerasimov, chief spokesman
of the Soviet Foreign Minis-
try, maintained that the
future of peace in the Middle
East depends on Israel. Gera-
simov also insisted that
Soviet support of the latest
Arab attempt to oust Israel
from the United Nations did
not reflect a hardening of the
Soviet attitude toward the
Jewish state.
An Arab move last month
to have the 43rd General
Assembly reject Israel's
credentials was defeated by a
vote of 95 to 41, one of the
largest margins since the
Arabs first attempted the
maneuver in 1982.
Although the Israelis were
disturbed that the Soviet
Union continued to vote with
the Arab nations on this
issue, they were told that a
change in the Soviet voting
pattern would occur only
when an international con-
ference for Middle East peace
is convened.
According to Gerasimov, the
fate of such a conference and
a peaceful resolution of the
Arab-Israeli conflict now
depends largely on the results
of Israel's parliamentary elec-
tions.
Gerasimov confirmed that
the Soviet government would
extend the visas of a five-
member Israeli consular dele-
gation that came to Moscow.
