BRONFMAN YOUTH FELLOWSHIPS IN ISRAEL 1989 solutist' position on church- state separation are coming up against people within the same organizations con- cerned about the delivery of services, in an environment where more and more ser- vices are being provided by sectarian institutions," Castelli said in an interview. He pointed to the recent battle over child care legisla- tion — a battle confused by sharp differences. between Jewish organizations about restrictions on the use of federal money for day care services provided by churches and synagogues. Castelli, a Catholic who spent years as a journalist covering the religious scene, also has been a close follower of the 1988 campaign, a bat- tle with clear church-state overtones. "The Republican Party is trying to have its cake and eat it too," he said. "On the one hand, they are trying to appeal to the evangelicals by working with the Religious Right. At the same time, the establishment doesn't want to give them power within the party. So in the past year, we've seen conflicts in a dozen states!' Castelli charged that Vice President George Bush is "almost schizophrenic" about the Christian Right — criti- cizing the Christian Right during the primaries, but still trying to portray himself as one of them. "And there has been a clear reluctance to criticize the excesses of the Christian Right," he said. "This is an essential part of the Republican coalition this year!" Saudis Ask U.S. For More Weapons Washington (JTA) — Saudi Arabia may ask the United States next year to sell it $5 billion to $8 billion worth of weapons, including F/A-18 fighter planes. However, ac- cording to reports last week, a fight with staunchly pro- Israel members of Congress would almost certainly ensue, possibly similar to the 1981 battle over the proposed sale of AWACS surveillance planes to the Saudis, which Congress ultimately approved. Lawmakers were outraged last spring to learn that Saudi Arabia bought Chinese CSS-2 ground-to-ground mis- siles capable of reaching Israel, without informing the Reagan administration. Moreoever, about the same time, members of Congress were stunned by news that Britain had concluded a deal with the Saudis estimated in the tens of billions of dollars. With the agreement, Britain supplanted the United States as the largest weapons sup- plier to the Middle East. The most recent congres- sional-administration battle over arms to Saudi Arabia came last year, when Con- gress forced President Reagan to eliminate 1,600 Maverick air-to-ground missiles from a $1 billion package to the Saudis, which included 12 new F-15 fighter planes. Rep. Lawrence Smith (D- Fla.), who often leads congres- sional fights to block Arab arms sales, said he was sus- picious of Saudi motives for seeking the latest batch of weapons. his summer a group of out- standing Jewish teenagers in the U.S. and Canada, com- ing from a variety of secular and synagogue backgrounds and entering their senior year of high school, will spend a stirring month of study, travel and dialogue in Israel. Dine Blasts 'Sixty Minutes' Washington (JTA) — American Israel Public Af- fairs Committee (AIPAC) ex- ecutive director Tom Dine charged that CBS-TV's "60 Minutes" report on AIPAC was intended to undermine U.S.-Israeli relations. At a dinner sponsored by the Jewish National Fund of Greater Washington last week, Dine dismissed criti- cism of AIPAC expressed by George Ball, who has not served in the government since the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Referring to Ball and two Il- linois Republicans who ap- peared on the recent show, former Sen. Charles Percy and former Rep. Paul Findlay, Dine said they "not once acknowledged" that Presi- dent Reagan and members of Congress argue that close U.S.-Israeli relations "ad- vance American interests abroad!' Dine said that his stand-in for the CBS report, AIPAC vice president Rabbi Israel Miller, "hung in there well!' AIPAC insiders said they pre- ferred seeing Miller serve as the "fall guy" on the show, rather than Dine, because they believed CBS reporter Mike Wallace would treat the rabbi gentler than he would a politico like Dine.
