paper over the differences bet-
ween blacks and Jews, and
argue that it is just a problem
of some extremists or political
figures on both sides," stress-
ed that the reality of the
situation is actually very
different.
"The tensions between
blacks ad Jews are becoming
greater and spreading fur-
ther," he said. "The recent
controversy in Chicago, the
tensions that erupted in New
York during the New York
primary, the upcoming
mayoral race in Los Angeles
that pits Tom Bradley against
a Jewish city councillor — are
all signs that this issue is not
going to go away. It is seeping
deeper into cities and
neighborhoods across the
country."
Germany To
Prosecute Nazi
New York (JTA) — West
Germany has initiated
criminal proceedings against
former Nazi Boleslays
Maikovskis, according to
Brooklyn District Attorney
Elizabeth Holtzman and
Menachem Rosensaft,
founder of the International
Network of Children of
Jewish Holocaust Survivors.
Holtzman and Rosensaft
met in Washington with West
German Ambassador Jurgen
Rufus. They were assured
that the West Germans were
serious about investigating
Maikovskis' war record.
It was first revealed Oct. 14
that Maikovskis, a World War
II police chief and Nazi col-
laborator in Latvia, had
escaped to Munster, West
Germany. Maikovskis had liv-
ed since 1951 in Mineola, N.Y.
The Justice Department's
Office of Special Investiga-
tions had sought his deporta-
tion since 1976.
Carlucci Speaks
On Arms Sales
Washington (JTA) —
Defense Secretary Frank
Carlucci denied Oct. 24 that
he believes U.S. arms sales to
the Middle East should be ap-
proved mainly because they
benefit the U.S. economy.
Carlucci told Israeli jour-
nalists at the Pentagon that
the jobs issue was legitimate,
but subsidiary to the need for
the United States to "retail
our influence with the Arab
countries as an honest broker
in the peace process."
"It serves nobody's interest,
neither ours nor Israel's, to
break the security relation-
ship" with moderate Arab
states, Carlucci said.
