The second annual "Positively Yours: A Jewish Singles Symposium" spon- sored by the Community Net- work for Jewish Singles and held at the Jewish Communi- ty Center appeared to be an uplifting experience for many who attended the two-day event. Larry Bruozis, a marketing expert from Chicago, was the event's keynote speaker. He spoke about change as a "threat, challenge or oppor- tunity:" "The overall message of the sympsoium was that no mat- ter what your marital status is, try to have a positive and uplifting day," said singles director Leanie Gunsberg. "Whether singles choose to be single or they're looking for the right person to come around, it's important to keep a positive attitude?' "I thought it would be an interesting way to spend a weekend," said Neal Grossman, 45, who came from Ohio to attend the event. "This was my first time coming to something like this, but I'm glad I did because I met someone real- ly wonderful at the dance on Saturday night." "I thought it would be in- teresting to see why types of things go on in the singles world," she said. "That's why I sat in on the workshop about ac- climating yourself to a health club setting. I wanted to learn how to use a health club for something more than taking a shower:' According to Laura Roberts, the Women's Health Club director at the JCC who spoke at the workshop on the topic, "the bar scene for singles has moved into the health clubs. It's the new singles scene." During lunch at Shiffman Hall, Oak Park resident Vicki Utchenick, 29, a switchboard operator at Answering. Ser- vices, Inc., Royal Oak, said she came to the sympsoium because "it was something different to do." Utchenick said she attend- ed last year's sympsoium, and generally goes to "any singles event that focuses in on self- esteem, attitude, perception or motivational skills!' She said she came to this event to gain insight on a variety of topics including the workshop entitled "Your Reflections" with guest speaker Ann Greene, P.T.C., the founder and director of In- ternational Images, Inc., whose clients include Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Ruth. Utchenick's friend, Aileen Miller, 28, a clerk/typist at the Children's Center of Wayne County and resident of Southfield, also attended the meeting. "I came mostly because it was something different, and the workshops really seemed to offer a lot," she said. Miller said she thought the symposium was well organiz- ed and very helpful.
