show as well as episodes of
"Night Heat."
Not that Waxman will
forget "Cagney and Lacey" or
Samuels so readily. It's hard
to give up a character who
shares the same sence of
mirth and mitzvot.
"Samuels has a Jewish
soul," says the actor. "Like a
lot of modern-day Jews, over
the years he has become more
and more Jewish.
"Maybe he once went to
shul once a year, maybe on
the High Holy Days. But he
has begun to sense more and
more about his own past and
the needs he now has as a
Jew."
Some of those needs are
hard to meet. "In later years,
Samuels feels he wants to get
back to his religion. It hurt
him when his son married a
Vietnamese woman," the ac-
tors, recalling a moving
episode. "But he did give his
new daughter-in-law his own
bubbie's candelabra."
For all the sentiments he
shares with the lieutenant,
Waxman admits there are
major differences between the
two. "We are similar but quite
different," he says. "Look, I'm
Canadian, he's a New Yorker.
I'm not as grouchy as
Samuels — although maybe
some in my family would say
otherwise."
That seems doubtful. Wife
Sara remembers the man she
met so many years ago as so-
meone special. But then, not
everyone went on such a
special first date.
"Our fart date was a movie,"
recalls Waxman. Who made
the movie? "Me."
The film was Tviggy, about
a Jewish model wannabe.
"Sara was impressed with my
sensitivity, that I was able to
see and understand the way
women feel."
Not all women. Waxman
recalls a time when he upset
his mother deeply with news
of his ambitions. "I had just
quit the University of Toron-
to Law School," says Wax-
man, a graduate of the
University of Western On-
tario (B.A. in philosophy and
English).
"My mother was very upset
when she heard I wanted to
be an actor. She said, 'What's
with this meshugas?' "
But Waxman was crazy for
acting. "So I ran away from
home," he chuckles.
But the run had its share of
obstacles, notably a lack of
funds. "One of my closest
friends — Seymour Weinsten,
and we're still friends today —
said, 'How much do you
need?' I said, "I'vvo hundred.'
He said, 'How do you want it,
lOs or 20s?' "
That's what friends are for.
