Sephardi Federation
Urges Arab Dialogue

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
president of the World
Sephardi Federation said last
week that he is "prepared to
talk to the devil himself if
that would bring peace to
Israel."
At a worldwide gathering of
the federation in Israel,
Nissim Gaon presented a
platform to Prime Minister
Yitzhak Shamir and Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres that
called for a dialogue with the
Arab world.
Gaon said that the federa-
tion has implored both
Shamir and Peres to use the
great experience of the
federation members in deal-
ing with Arabs.
"We grew up among Arabs,
and worked and made busi-
ness deals with them in our
countries of origin, and we

Paris (JTA) — Maurice
Papon, budget minister in the
government of former Presi-
dent Valery Giscard d'Esta-
ing, was secretly indicted
three months ago for wartime
collaboration, it was revealed
last week.
Papon, 79, was the second-
highest official in the
Bordeaux area during the
war. He has been accused of
willingly helping the Nazis
deport 1,690 Jews between
1942 and 1944.
After the war, he was the
longest-serving police chief of
Paris until he joined Giscard's
government.
The drive for the indict-
ment was led by German-
born Nazi hunter Beate
Klarsfeld, who had an impor-
tant role in bringing the

know how they feel and
think," Gaon said.
He stressed that the federa-
tion's members are willing to
act as "speakers for the
Israeli government."
Included in its "Platform
for Social Justice" is a call to
make public elementary and
high school education truly
free and compulsory for all
children and creation of a
fund of development bonds to
encourage the young to stay
in development towns and
bring new immigrants to
those areas.
Gaon repeatedly stressed
that the federation has no
intention of becoming in-
volved in Israel's internal
politics, or of choosing sides
for or against 'The Law of
Return' and other controver-
sial issues in Israel.

former Lyon gestapo chief
Klaus Barbie to justice more
than 40 years after the war.
Klarsfeld charged that the
French authorities were try-
ing to bury the Papon case in
solidarity with the former
minister. Papon always
denied collaborating with the
Germans and insisted he had
helped Jews escape.
Papon was indicted on
similar charges in 1983 and
1984, but they were dropped
last year after the court of ap-
peals cancelled proceedings
on technical grounds.
Papon is only one of a
number of ranking French
officials accused by Jewish
survivors and former
resistance fighters of
collaboration.

Bonn (JTA) — Both East
and West Germany officially
will mark the 50th anniver-
sary of Kristallnacht next
month.
A representative of the
Communist East German
government will march in a
silent parade in West Berlin,
Heinz Galinski, chairman of
the West German Jewish
community, announced re-
cently. West German officials
will attend an East German
commemoration as well.
Kristallnacht or "the night

of broken glass," was the first
organized pogrom against
German Jews when on Nov. 9,
1938, Nazi mobs burned and
destroyed Jewish businesses,
homes and synagogues all
over Germany.

The main observance in
West Germany will be held in
Frankfurt, where Chancellor
Helmut Kohl is scheduled to
address a large audience of
Jews and non-Jews about the
lessons to be learned from
Germany's past.
