An Israel Defense Force spokesman said last Friday that all planes returned safe- ly to base after accurate hits on their targets in Sidon, Mashhara, Aluweza and Maidoun. Reports from Beirut said that units of the Syrian army had been put on maximum alert. U.N. officers said several score of terrorists were based in the target areas and were seen fleeing in all directions. After the attacking aircraft had disappeared, the terror- ists returned and fired anti- aircraft missiles into the emp- ty skies. Reports from Beirut said the Israeli planes and helicopters had carried out seven sorties over the targets in a one-hour period. Hezbollah sources admitted that they had suffered 24 casualties out of a reported 36 casualties in the raids. The Iranian-backed Hezbol- lah movement claimed credit for the car-bomb attack, and warned Israel that any retal- iatory operation would en- danger Israeli prisoners and other hostages they hold. The United States also reportedly asked Israel not to retaliate against the Hez- bollah, out of concern for the American hostages.
