Dantos Aid Barrier-Free
Village At Camp Maas
MARLA FELDMAN
LEASING MANAGER
Marvin and Betty Danto
have made a contribution to
construct a cabin in a new
barrier-free village planned
for the Fresh Air Society's
Camp Maas.
The new village, consisting
of six cabins and a main
lodge, has been designed to be
accessible to physically
disabled individuals.
This facility, when built,
will be one of the few
winterized barrier-free camps
in Michigan. Most camps in
the state, including Camp
Mass, were built prior to the
Barrier-Free Building Code
adopted in 1975. The new
village will be designed,
however, also to accommodate
groups of persons who are
physicially disabled.
The cabins will be larger
than other facilities at camp
to allow for wheelchair
mobility. Both showers and
toilets in each cabin will be
handicapped accessible. Two
families will also be accom-
modated in each cabin, with
private access to bathroom
facilities for family programs.
The lodge will consist of a
dining room and kosher kit-
chen, and three separate
meeting rooms, including a
library and media center. The
arrangement of the cabins
and lodge will allow a max-
imum amount of indepen-
dence to be experienced by
persons who are physically
disabled.
The facility will allow
organizations who serve the
disabled to offer year-round
programs. An effort will also
be made to integrate
whenever possible disabled
Jewish youngsters in the
summer camp programs.
The new village will also of-
fer expanded service to other
user groups who participate
in school camping programs
during the non-summer
season, and to families who
participate in year-round
family retreats. Priority will
be given to those programs for
persons with disabilities.
Danto is a past member of
the board of the Fresh Air
Society, and a current
member of the board of the
Jewish Home for Aged and
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion.
The Dantos also originated
and fund the "Dress Up for
Yontiff' program at the
Jewish Home for the Aged.
This program allows a person
without family of funds to
purchase new clothing before
the holidays of Rosh
Hashanah, Passover and
Chanukah. For information
about the barrier-free facility,
call Fresh Air, 661-0600.
