"Understanding the Jewish
Child" will be the theme of
the 20th day-long Institute on
Judaism sponsored by Temple
Israel Sisterhood on Nov. 10
at 9:30 a.m. -
Representatives from 20
Oakland County school
districts have been invited to
attend the event. In addition
to local districts others in-
vited include: Ferndale, Hol-
ly, Lake Orion, Madison
Heights and South Lyon.
The institute will begin
with displays of ceremonial
objects significant to Jewish
holidays and holy days.
Hostesses will be present to
answer questions regarding
the holidays and symbols.
Rabbi Daniel B. Syme will
give the keynote address en-
titled, "Four Probing Ques-
tions Teachers Ask Me!' Rab-
bi Syme is vice president of
the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations. He

ment of religion and educa-
tion. Chairing the institute is
Carol Cooper, past Sisterhood

Cooper in planning the in-
stitute are: Adrienne Milin,
co-chairman and Judy Kroot.
Chairmen for the day are:
Maggie Feldman, displays;
Gilda Poisson and Rita
Abramson, school tables; Ida
Nemzin, registration; and
Annie Weiss, luncheon.

Sonia Syme

oversees the union's programs
of outreach, education, televi-
sion and film production, the
task force on youth suicide as
well as the UAHC Fund for
Reform Judaism.
Rabbi Syme was graduated
from the University of
Michigan with Phi Beta Kap-
pa honors. He won numerous
awards and honors while a
student at the rabbinical
school and was ordained in
1972 from the Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of
Religion, Cincinnati.
He holds a doctorate in
education from Columbia
University Thachers College,
and has taught at the New
York campus of the Hebrew
Union College.
Rabbis M. Robert Syme,
Harold Loss and Paul Yedwab
of Temple Israel will conduct
workshops preceding and
following the keynote ad-
dress. The workshops are
"Our Celebrations" with Rab-
bi Syme, "Our Homes" with
Rabbi Loss and "Our Values

The Department of
Michigan of the Jewish War
Veterans and the Jewish War
Veterans Auxiliaries will hold
a membership hoedown
square dance on Nov. 5 at 7:30
p.m. at the Jewish War
Veterans Memorial Home.
Martha Hauptman, junior
vice president, said a light
supper will be served. A
square dance caller will be
available for the dancing.
There is a charge. Reserva-
tions are open only to all
members, their spouses or a
guest by calling the Jewish
War Veterans, 559-5680.
Deadline for reservations is
today.

Post, Auxiliary
To Have Meeting

The Sol Yetz-Morris Cohen
Post and Auxiliary will hold
its first regular meeting of
the season on Tuesday at 8:30
p.m., in the Jewish War
Veterans Memorial Home.
Plans for the coming year
will be discussed, and reports
will be given on the various
service dates that have been
met during the past season.
Friends are invited.
