WE'RE FIGHTING FOR YOUR LIFE American Heart Association seats in front and 86 in back plus 10 seats and a bar. In the Front Room, with its stained glass, Tiffany lamp shades, wall paintings, crests, smoked mirrors and brown leather booths, highly touted Jim Bajor is on piano playing listening music Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Satur- day . . . His two albums are standouts . . . The piano bar has seven chairs . . . and is a favorite of many. The small, open-grille kit- chen at Caucus Club might tend to have folks ask the question of how such ex- cellent food can be prepared there . . . Between chefs like Arthur Calloway and Ron Winninger, high-quality in- gredients and preparation, much vent is given to the ac- clamation that great Caucus Club cooking could be done in a closet if necessary . . . Ex- ecutive Chef Arthur Calloway has been at Caucus Club almost three years . . . He was with Jimmy Schmidt about eight years at London Chop House. Can't forget my dessert .. . boisenberry sherbet on a bed of melted custard with an Italian apple torte in the center . . . Such deliciousness you just don't imagine . . . Big favorite at the Caucus Club continues to also be its fam- ed goldbrick sundae which another enjoyed with closed eyes. "The Caucus Club is the on- ly place," says Nancy, "where when you reach the back room, you've arrived!" Barbra Streisand sang here before her heyday . . . and now Sheri Nichols has the au- dience in the palm of her hand as she sings with em- phasis on high entertainment. She is an entertainer's entertainer . . . comedienne, songstress, actress at the mike, crowd pleaser and a very clever handler of her masterful material mixture . . . Sheri is high talent .. . appearing Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8:30 and 10:30 shows. The night I was there, he song, "Seems Like Old Times" for the crowded Back Room Grille was meaningful . . . Sheri last played the Caucus Club a few years ago. There is no serving while Sheri is on . . . singing "All That Jazz" or whatever with her varied animations to much highly-deserved applause. Sheri's facial antics are great . . . Those in back of her miss out . . . and some prefer to stay for a second show .. . so they can get a seat facing her. Why Sheri Nichols is con- sidered among Detroit's finest entertainers is very evident. The famous character and Toby Mugs at Caucus Club are not for sale . . . These Royal Doulton collector items in the likeness of humans since days of yesteryears are in both rooms . . . and another very precious Caucus Club trademark. Fine wines may be obtain- ed by the glass or bottle. Many former Caucus Club patrons of yesteryears are beginning to rediscover that favorite place across the street . . . It is certainly the fervent hope of its seven owners that they continue to do so. Caucus Club hours are lunch, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday; dinner, 5-9 p.m. Monday, 5-11 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and Satur- day . . . Caucus or Happy Hours with complimentary hors d'oeuvres are Monday- Friday, 4-6 p.m. The Caucus Club of today is again much like the rich- tradition operation it was in the fine hours of yesteryears. That the Caucus Club is back on track makes for plea- sant memories revisited .. . And it is certainly with much fondness that those memories are cherished. Return of the Caucus Club to its original state of accep- tance is high achievement. It has again won a mean- ingful 1988 Dining Distinc- tion Award from Holiday Travel magazine . . . Dark mahogany woods still blend with cherrystone for elegant styling . . . Prices are still within reason for the highest of standards among food, ser- vice and entertainment .. . Contemporary and tradi- tional matchings continue to dominate in the subdued at- mospheres . . . Its New Yorkish propriety is still an apparent distinction . . . Above all, so many people who forgot have suddenly been awakened to a marvelous realization . . . the Caucus Club in the Penobscot Building is still there. OVERHEARD . . . at Gateway Deli, 11 Mile and Lahser, Harvard Row Mall, "Many of us don't know what poor losers we are until we start dieting" . . . at Sila's, 12 Mile east of Greenfield, "My wife says she only asks for pin money. But the first pin she wanted had 12 diamonds in it" . . . at Dorian's, Van Dyke and 14 Mile, "If a pickpocket would go through my pockets now, all he would get is exer- cise."
