ple Beth El, Temple Kol Ami,

Jacob and the Troy Jewish
Congregation. It is required
to have 30 members at large,
including six from outside the
Reform community. Officers
and their congregations are:
president, James Jonas:Ibm-
ple Israel; vice presidents,
Marvin Goldman, Beth El,
Janet Levine, 'Ibmple Emanu-
El, and Jim Fuller, Temple
Kol Ami; secretaries, Dr. Dan
Levitsky, Beth El, and Geri
White, Temple Israel.
Eichner said she hopes to
work with the Reform con-
gregations so that they can
develop programming in the
temples for the day school
students. "We want to in-
tegrate our kids into the
synagogue," Eichner explain-
ed. "We don't want our day
school students to feel de-
viant. We don't want them to
feel superior and we don't
want them to feel like they're
outcasts?'
Many of the local Reform
rabbis will maintain a rela-
tionship with the Yavneh
Academy. Some are ex officio
members of the board; others
are among the founders. Rab-
bi Norman T. Roman of Tem-
ple Kol Ami said that many
will act in an advisory capaci-
ty. He said the rabbis may
visit the school on a rotating
basis to interact with the
students.
"Our most important role is
to maintain communication,
cooperation and support of
the families who have
children in the school," Rab-
bi Roman said. He added that
he hoped that the parents
who have children in the
Reform day school will re-
mainsupportive of the
temples and their congrega-
tional schools. He explained
that the Yavneh Academy
will not be a replacement for
the temple religious schools,
but an addition to what is
already available to the
Reform community.
Rabbi Lane Steinger of
Temple Emanu-El saw the
role of the rabbis as sup-
porters of the day school.
"The Reform rabbis should be
supporters of the Yavneh day
school, encourage others in
the Reform community to
support the day school and
help promote it among those
families who seek a full-time
Jewish educational oppor-
tunity that is representative
of Reform (Judaism)."
Parent involvement will
also be a major Yavneh objec-
tive. Eichner said that parent
education will start im-
mediately upon the beginn-
ing of the school year. She ex-
plained that often parents are
initimidated by what their
kids learn in religious school.
However, if they are educated
about the subjects their kids
are studying "they will be
very supportive of what their
kids are learning and the
whole family learns together.
And Ithink this will be a
much more meaningful ex-
perience for everyone."
Eichner expects to plan
parent seminars on holidays,
Shabbat and on Hebrew
reading proficiency.
Eichner is currently taking
applications for teaching posi-
tions. But, she is very par-
ticular about whom she is
willing to hire. She is looking
for what she calls seasoned
teachers, persons who have
had classroom teaching ex-
perience. Master's degrees are
preferred, as well as a Reform
Jewish background.
The school will operate
under the jurisdiction of the
Walled Lake School District
since it lies within its borders.
(Drake Road is its eastern-
most boundary.) Walled Lake
will have to approve the
Yavneh course of study to see
if it is comparable to its own.
On that score, Eichner is con-
fident. "I have no doubt that
it will be more than com-
parable to any public school
system?'
She also will negotiate with
the Walled Lake schools
about busing and providing
instruction for children with
special needs. Because of the
separation of church and
state principle, the Walled
Lake district cannot come in-
to a parochial school.
However, children with
special needs — the learning
disabled, emotionally im-
paired, developmentally
disabled and the like — will
be able to go into the area's
public schools to receive
special services.
Will the Yavneh Academy
have an impact on Hillel Day
School which draws much of
its enrollment from the same
area? Currently, it will not,
Eichner said, because the
Hillel students are already
too old for the Yavneh pro-
gram. However, it may be
significant to future enroll-
ment. "We will provide an
alternative for Reform
parents who want to send
their children to a Jewish day
