BACKGROUND: Renee Rom Mahler grew
up on Fairfield in northwest Detroit. At
age 4, she began - to study piano with
Misha Kottler. "I regret to this day that
I was not encouraged to go on stage, but
at that time that was not a place for a
nice Jewish girl?'
Mahler also played the classical guitar -
as a youngster. Her guitar teacher was
Joe Fava. She found classical guitar
very difficult but challenging.
Mahler was a member of the first
graduation class at Mlimford High
School, 1953. A few years later, she
married Burt Mahler, who lived across
the street. She confesses that when she
first met him at age 16, she did not like
him. After her marriage, she quit
college and began raising a family.
In 1962, the Mahlers decided to move
to Tucson, Ariz. "It was an uncivilized,
western town;' she recalls. The family
owned and operated the Double U Dude
Ranch, which is now the famous Canyon
Ranch Spa.
"It was grand fun;' she says. They
lived on 80 acres with chickens, goats,
cats, and the 100 guests at the ranch.
The children never watched television
and had to be driven three miles to
catch the bus for school. The family
moved back to Detroit because of the
isolation and the long working hours.
"We also missed the Jewish
community?'
At age 35, Mahler went back to school
and earned three degrees. Mahler notes
that there are many opportunities for
older women who want to work. "The
hardest thing is making the move?'
Over the years she has worked in
several positions as a specialist on -
aging, including director of special
projects for Jewish Home for Aged,
assistant director LeVine Institute on
Aging, and assistant administrator at
the Jewish Federation Apartments in
Oak Park. She is also a communications
expert on aging as president of Geron
Associates, a consulting and marketing
firm of products for older adults. She
has a column in the Detroit Free Press
informing the public of services for the
aging, and she is the author of Living
with an Aging Parent. She also is
working on another radio show series
