THE ZIONIST ORGANIZATION OF AMERICA

METROPOLITAN DETROIT DISTRICT

founder of the International
Network of Children of Jew-
ish Holocaust Survivors,
alleged that Boleslays
Maikovskis is being allowed
to remain in this country —
despite the fact that his
deportation has been cleared
by the U.S. Supreme Court —
because of his affiliation with
the Republican Party's Heri-
tage Groups which worked for
former President Richard
Nixon's re-election.
Rosensaft made the charge
last week before leaders of
more than 20 Jewish organ-
izations organized by New
York City Council President
Andrew Stein and the Jewish
Community Relations Coun-
cil of New York.
Maikovskis' participation
in the 1972 Nixon re-election
campaign was reported re-
cently by the Philadelphia In-
quirer. He is believed to be the
only convicted war criminal
to have served on a presiden-
tial campaign.
Spokespersons for the U.S.
Justice Department and the
Republican National Com-
mittee had no immediate
comment Wednesday on
Rosensaft's charges.
In 1965, Maikovskis was
convicted in absentia of the
mass murder the villagers of
Nazi-occupied Audrini, Lat-
via, by a Soviet Court in Lat-
via and was ordered deported
from the Untied States in
1984.
In June 1986, the U.S.
Supreme Court denied a peti-
tion to review his case,
thereby clearing the way for
this deportation. Despite
legal efforts to oust Maikov-
skis from the United States,
he still till resides in Mineola,
N.Y.
Rosensaft called on Attor-
ney General Richard Thorn-
burgh "to put a stop to this
perversion of justice and to
immediately deport Maikov-
skis?'

United Nations (JTA) — A
prominent Palestinian doctor
for the West Bank charged
Tuesday that Israel uses tox-
ic gas to quell the demonstra-
tions in the territories, and
that as a result, more than
800 pregnant Palestinian
women had lost their fetuses.
Dr. Muhammad Jadalla,
chairman of the Union of the
Health Committees in the
West Bank and Gaza, told a
news conference that Israel's
security forces are using a
toxic tear gas known as
CNNCS.
Ambassador Johanan Bein
of Israel called Jadalla's ac-
cusation a blatant lie.
