She indicated that the cost of delivering a child for someone on Medicare is much more burdensome to the taxpayers than payments for an abor- tion itself. She countered the argument that 36 states have already passed a similar pro- posal by asserting that the re- maining 14 states are the most populous in the country. Smith indicated that tax- funded abortions discrim- inate against poor people and particularly minorities in that minority women are much more likely to have abortions than non-minority women. Ms. Smith also ad- mitted that Proposal A is part of a larger plan by her organization to end legalized abortion entirely. Questions were raised from the audience as to additional funds for support of children who would be born to econom- ically deprived parents. Ms. Smith indicated that she was in favor of increased funding for support of these families. More than 50 persons at- tended Sunday's debate on Proposal A, which seeks to end state-funded abortions for those persons receiving state assistance. Speakers at the American Jewish Congress event heard Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg of Young Israel of Southfield, Rabbi Paul Yed- wab of Temple Israel, Jeanne Korsch of National Council of Jewish Women and Carol Smith of the Committee to End Tax Funded Abortions. Rabbi Goldberg stated that the Talmud forbids abortion because it constitutes the tak- ing of a human life. Rabbi Yedwab raised contrary sources indicating that the Talmud is not so clear cut and that there is room for debate as to the legality of abortion within the Jewish religion. Korsch indicated in her remarks that Proposal A is "mean spirited" in that it denies abortions only to those individuals who are not financially able to afford this I GAMES I JEWISH CROSSWORDS Please note: spelling of Yiddish and Hebrew transliterations vary. 61.
