Hanna Karbal Honored
At Yeshiva Annual Dinner
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah
will celebrate its 74th an-
niversary at its annual din-
ner on Nov. 20 at the Westin
Hotel. The banquet will be
the occasion to present the
19th Annual Golden Torah
Award to Mrs. Hannah
Karbal.
Mrs. Karbal will be
recognized "for her generosi-
ty and devotion to Yeshivath
Beth Yehudah and other
Jewish educational causes
throughout the world."
Besides her activities on
behalf of Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah, Mrs. Karbal is an
active supporter of Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek, Yeshivat
Akiva, Israel Bonds, Bar-Ilan
University and other local
and international charitable
causes.
Mrs. Karbal and her late
husband, Morris, were active
supporters of the day school
idea. Mr. Karbal served on
the yeshiva's board as
secretary and was an active
fund-raiser. After his death in
1973, Mrs. Karbal became a
leader and benefactor. Mrs.
Karbal is the first woman to
be honored with the yeshiva's
Golden Torah Award.
The dinner also will
recognize the continued
growth of Yeshivah Beth
Yehudah and Beth Jacob
School for Girls. Beth
Yehudah was one of the first
day schools to be established
outside of New York City.
The yeshiva's enrollment
has experienced a mini explo-
sion in the last few years.
There are now 630 full-day
students being serviced in the
nrusery throughhigh school
programs at both schools.
The school attracts students
from throughout the
Midwest, including Ohio, In-
diana, Illinois, Missouri,

New York and Ontario.
The dinner is the schools'
major fund-raiser of the year.
The proceeds are used to pro-
vide scholarships for families
that are unable to pay full
tuition. For information and
dinner reservations, call the
yeshiva, 557-6750, 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. daily and 9 a.m. to
1 p.m. on Sundays.
7 Rabbis To Discuss
Who Is A Jew
Seven community rabbis
will discuss the who is a Jew
question at a public forum
7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the
Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield. Par-
ticipating rabbis are
Elimelech Goldberg, Young
Israel, Southfield; Allan
Meyerowitz, Congregation
B'nai Moshe; David A.
Nelson, Congregation Beth
Shalom; Daniel Polish, Thm-
ple Beth El; Lane Steinger,
Temple Emanu-El; Alon
'Iblwin, Aleynu; and Sherwin
Wine, Birmingham Thmple.
Dr. Zvi Gitelman, professor
of political science at the
University of Michigan, will
serve as moderator and
discussion leader. The forum
will discuss the basis for
authority in Judaism, preser-
ving Jewish identity, does
Israel have authority for the
Diaspora, and Jewish
pluralism.
This is the second public
forum sponsored by the
Detroit chapter of the
American Jewish Committee.
