Steinberg, executive director
of the WJCongress.
Since its establishment in
1949, East Germany has re-
fused to pay reparations to
the victims of Nazism, deny-
ing that it bore responsibili-
ty to the atrocities during
World War II.
Steinberg could not say
what is the amount of pay-
ments East Germany is con-
sidering, but according to
sources in New York and East
Berlin, it is about $100
million.
Since signing an agreement
with the WJCongress in 1952,
the West German govern-
ment has paid about $45
billion — in today's rate of ex-
change — in reparation to
Jewish victims of the
Holocaust and to the State of
Israel.
Steinberg said that Bronf-
- man will be joined at the
meeting with Honecker by
Israel Singer, secretary
general of the WJC.

Shamir, Peres
To Face-Off In
TV Debate

Jerusalem (JTA) — The two
candidates for prime minister,
Premier Yitzhak Shamir and
Foreign Minister Shimon
Peres, will meet in a televi-
sion debate on Oct. 23, nine
days before the Knesset elec-
tion.
Shamir heads the Likud
bloc and Peres is chairman of
the Labor Party.
The broad terms of the
debate were finalized last
week, but some details re-
main to be worked out.
The moderator will decide
whether the dialogue will be
spontaneous or if the par-
ticipants be given the ques-
tions in advance.
Nissim Mishal, Israel
Television's Washington cor-
respondent, has been named
moderator, but he must be
confirmed by the chairman of
the Israel Broadcast Author-
ity, Uri Porath, and by Justice
Eliezer Goldberg, chairman of
the Central Election Commit-
tee.
The debate will last 30
minutes.
