Brennan for Probate Judge, 5855 Cliffside, Troy, MI. A 102 FRIDAY OCTOBER 21, 1988 scene included blue water in a shiny polyester, felt ani- mals, and a rainbow of satin. Choose a fairly heavy fabric for the background and a fair- ly light one for the lining The background should be a strong fabric because the ap- pliques must be sewn onto it. But you should also remem- ber not to make the entire chuppah too heavy, since it has to be held up during the ceremony. Both pieces should be the full size of the chup- pah. And don't forget to pro- vide a way to attach the canopy to poles; you can make ties from the base fabric, or you can attach metal or wooden hooks. A word about poles. Who- ever would have ordinarily provided the chuppah for your wedding — rabbi, syna- gogue, caterer, hotel or florist — will probably let you use their poles. If not, you can buy pine or fir "rounds" (dowels) at a lumberyard. The rounds should be at least 1 inch in diameter. When you put up the chup- pah, friends should hold the poles steady, but it is best if the ends are long enough to rest on the floor. In a pinch, you can use broomsticks for poles. However, these are too short to rest on the ground, and your friends may find it tiring to hold them aloft dur- ing the ceremony. If you are making an appli- que picture, be creative in your use of patterned fabrics. We made rolling hills with green and white gingham checks. We used two different sizes of checks to provide the feeling of distance, The larger checks served as the grassy knoll in the foreground, while the smaller checks were the hills on the horizon. Cut out paper patterns for the pieces of your picture in advance. From your scale drawing you will know how large to make each piece. When guests arrive at the bee, you can hand out pattern pieces, material and pins. Decide in advance how the edges of each piece should be finished. If they will require seam binding or lining, be sure to leave 5/8 inch bias. If your applique pieces are not symmetrical (as is likely in a pictorial representation), re- member to place the pattern on the fabric so that the figure faces the same direc- tion as in your drawing. If the appliques are not lined, put the pattern on the right side of the material. If a figure is to be lined and made from two pieces of the same material, cut the two pieces together, with right sides facing each other. If the lining is a different fabric, place the lining on top of the applique material, right sides facing, before cutting. An alternative finish is a machine overcast stitch with thread in the same color as the cloth, or in a contrasting color to highlight. Felt does not require a finish. At the bee, make sure to have enough scissors, pins, needles and workspace for all your guests. Depending on the pat- tern and materials, you may need more than one sewing machine. On the wedding day, your friends will be able to point to their own stitchery as they celebrate with the bride and groom. And you will be able to point to your good friends who have contributed to the happy occasion. ❑ ""' I NEWS 1'1 Books Displayed Jerusalem — An exhibit of Jewish textbooks from all over the world, printed bet- ween 1488-1918, is on display at the Jewish National and University Library on the Givat Ram campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
