N
ew York — Homeless
men and women in
New Haven have been
coming around Yale Universi-
ty every Sunday night, hav-
ing heard they could get a
free and nourishing meal
there.
What they didn't know was
that the food they were eating
was kosher.
The homeless have been
once-a-week dinner guests for
several months at an
Orthodox-sponsored food
facility at Yale University.
The facility is one of 20
kosher dining clubs sponsored
throughout the United States
by the National Council of
Young Israel. It is the only
one of the 20 to participate in
a citywide program of feeding
the hungary and the
homeless.
The Yale program was
started last February, accor-
ding to Rabbi Michael Whit-
man, head of the Young Israel
of New Haven and adviser —
and occasional cook — for the
Young Israel "soup kitchen."

members of the kosher club,

idea of making the kosher
feeding facility a component
of the city's network of soup
kitchens. That program is
known as the Downtown
Evening Soup Kitchen
(DESK).
The Young Israel facility
provides the free meals for
- the homeless only on Sunday,
when the kitchen is closed to
Yale's faculty members and
students.
That works out well,
because the five churches par-
ticipating in the DESK pro-
gram serve food to the
homeless the other six days of
the week. On Sundays, they
provide worship facilities to
their congregants.

of the Wandering Monks of
Emmaus. The Wandering
Monks are a society of men
and women who work with
the spiritually and physical-
ly homeless. Brother Denys, a
director of DESK, helped fit
the Young Israel facility into
the DESK program.
The cook and two helpers
are Orthodox Jews who work
Monday through Friday as
paid employees. The facility is
open for breakfast and lunch
on Saturdays, when no cook-
ing is done.
For Sundays, the students
with the help of Rabbi
Whitman and Father Denys
— cook, prepare the tables
and serve the meals to the
homeless. They also do the
necessary housework after
their guests have eaten and
departed.
Brother Denys arranged for
the Young Israel facility to
get food from a local food
bank. Since that source has
no kosher provisions, "that
gap was met by an arrange-
ment with Lubavitcher of-
ficials in the Crown Heights
section of Brooklyn," Whit-
man said.
Initially parents were a lit-
tle nervous about their
children working in a large-
ly deserted campus. But
Goldberg and Whitman
agreed that the homeless who
come for a meal have not been
a problem to the students.
Goldberg explained that
when he sees the homeless,
he realizes that he comes
from "a very privileged
background."

Alert to Parents!
When we ask you to please
recognize the signs of cystic
fibrosis and other lung-
damaging diseases, we're not
trying to alarm you.
Look at it this way. If your
child does NOT have C F or
another serious lung-damaging
disease, he has nothing to lose
by checking with a doctor, or
taking a simple diagnostic test.
If your child DOES have
C F, or another condition that
could damage his lungs, he has
a lot to lose by not having the
chance for early diagnosis and
prompt effective medical care.
So, when you look at it like
that. we hope you'll look at
this and learn the following:
