Students Get
Merit Honors

Scott Chupack, Jason
Hirsch and Benjamin
Weisenfeld of Southfield-
Lathrup High School have
been named 1989 National
Merit Scholarship competi-
tion semifinalists.
These scholarship programs
assess performance in math,
English and writing. The
students must meet the stan-
dards of a minimum qualify-
ing score whose formula is set
by each state. Surpassing the
qualifying score determines
eligibility for semifinalist
competition.
The program offers 1,800
single payment, National
Merit $2,000 scholarships on
a state representational basis.
A committee will identify the
finalists by next March.
Also recognized were
students whose scores nearly
qualified them as National
Merit semifinalists, including
Amy Finkelstein and Jill
Kliger from
Southfield-Lathrup.
