From Baku To Detroit:
A Success Story
Now we can see it before
you can feel it. When it's no
bigger than the dot on this
page.
And when it's 90% cur-
able. With the best chance
of saving the breast.
The tnck is catching it
early. And that's exactly
what a mammogram can do.
A mammogram is a sim-
ple x-ray that s simDly the
best news yet for cetecting
breast cancer. And saving
lives.
If you're over 35, ask
your doctor about
mammography.
Give yourself the
chance of a lifetime.-
AMERICAN
CANCER
SOCIETY'
fi
e was only 12 years
old when learning to
cook after school .. .
Five years later, Lazar
Israilov was head chef at the
same restaurant in Baku,
Russia, near the Caspian Sea.
Today, 33 years after, Lazar
is owner of two Orchard Fami-
ly Restaurants in the United
States . . . He came here with
wife Nina, son Emil and
daughter Radmille . . . spent
three years cooking kosher
dishes in the catering sector
of the Jewish Community
Center of West Bloomfield .. .
and in July of 1983 opened
his first Orchard Family
Restaurant on Orchard Lake
Road south of 14 Mile in the
K-Mart Shopping Plaza.
His original restaurant is
now run by wife, Nina, who
cooks the homemade foods,
and manager Mike Halagian.
Lazar runs the second
locale . . . cooking the
homemade dishes like stuffed
cabbage, flanken, blintzes,
etc. in a spot completely
remodeled from the defunct
Melanie Ice Cream site on
Farmington Road north of
Maple.
It .opened Sept. 5 . . . and
the two "little children" that
came over with Lazar and
Nina, are working with dad
in the new place . . . Emil is
now 15 and Radmille 17.
There's seating for 78 at
clean booths and tables in a
thoroughly non-fancy family
atmosphere with emphasis on
three things . . . homemade
quality, cleanliness and
pleasantness.
Our evening waitress,
Valentina Gordin, is an exam-
ple of the latter . . . During
the day, she is a Dupont
chemist and at night presents
food in a very qualified way at
the Orchard Family Retau-
rant on Farmington Road.
No frills, plain wallpaper
and new drop ceiling, but the
food is high quality . . .
prepared with homemade
goodness . . . I had the pan-
fried trout and our companion
enjoyed skinless fillet of
chicken breast . . . We both
had the authentic cabbage
borscht made without meat
. . . Lazar makes his own
strudel . . . and that's what
we had . . . apple and
blueberry.
The good-sized kitchen with
walk-in refrigerator is more
than ample to prepare the
homemade foods prepared by
Lazar . . . Gleaming stainless
steel and clean floors make
for a fine food preparedness
operation.
Nothing fancy . . . good-
sized kitchen, white
wallpaper without pictures or
hanging artifacts . . . Just
well-prepared intimate fami-
ly dining.
Orchard Family Restaurant
on Farmington Road, north of
Maple, is open seven days .. .
Monday-Saturday 7 a.m. to 9
p.m., and Sunday 8 a.m. to 9
p.m. . . . The Orchard Lake
Rd. locale is a six-day opera-
tion, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. . . . N _ o
Sundays.
Lazar and Nina are very
hard workers . . . They love
America . . . and customers
appreciate their fervent
desire to please.
GENERAL MILLS has
changed its mind . . . Ben-
nigan's on Northwestern
Hwy. now won't become an
Italian restaurant . . . Plans
are for it to remain as it is .. .
so far . . . But you never know
with this conglomerate.
THE TRUE STORY melo-
drama by Michigan Opera
Theatre, Ballad of Baby Doe
which opened at Fisher
Theater last Friday and ends
tomorrow night, was a fitting
celebration of MOT's 500th
performance.
Its very fine cast and strong,
enchanting voices gave many
entertaining moments to the
attendees who offered acclaim
to Douglas Moore's lyrical
Western which one would
hardly think could possibly
be made into an opera .. .
Although it deviates from the
actual story of Elizabeth
"Baby Doe" Court and
Horace "H.A.W." Tabor, with
improvisions judiciated by the
writer's pen.
- A fine opening night even-
ing was preceded for many by
dinner in the Fisher
Building's 60-year-old Recess
Club . . . At our black-tie
table were . . . Shirley and
Larry Goldberg, Ada and Ike
Eisenfeld and daughter Beth
Eisenfeld . . . Ada is a former
mayor of Mount Clemens and
Beth works with a New York
advertising agency.
The original 1971 version of
Follies, Tony Award musical
comedy written by James
Goldman, produced by Hal
Prince, with music of Steven
Sondheim, opens Oct. 21, run-
ning through Nov. 6 . . . star-
ring Juliet Prowse, Nancy
Dussault and Edie Adams.
ONE OF HIS appearances
is as Liberace in all the late
