media victory of the Palesti-
nians, although awakening
the world to their plight, may
nevertheless turn out to be a
hollow victory. It is only
Palestinians who can heal the
trauma and distrust which is
so deeply rooted in the Israel
psyche.
It is only Palestinians who
can say to Israelis that they
do not seek Haifa, Tel Aviv
and Netanya, but a sovereign
national reality which will in
no way jeopardize a Jewish
state.
The grassroots support in
Israel for militant Jewish set-
tlers in the West Bank or ex-
treme nationalist parties is,
in most cases, not grounded
in any real ideological com-
mitment. This support, where
it exists, is largely fed by fear
for Jewish survival. If this
fear could be healed then
there would be no longer a
political base for ideological
extremism taking root among
Israelis.
Voices of sanity will be
heard in the land if we are
both open to healing our im-
ages of the other . . . born of
past delusions of grandeur.
The Palestinian uprising is
an opportunity. Its
significance will not be deter-
mined by the amount of
television coverage it earns.
No, it can only be significant
if a proud Palestinian nation
comes to terms with the fact
that it will never have a home
unless it recognizes that
Israelis have come home.

Greek Bishop
Apologizes For
Remarks

(JTA) — The Greek Ortho-
dox bishop of Greece has
apologized for his anti-
' Semitic comments about the
producers of the controversial
film The Last Temptation of
Christ.
In a pastoral letter released
a few weeks ago, Bishop Max-
imov spoke of blasphemous
producers who are "with
those who first crucified
Christ," and who "try to do it
a second time." Some ex-
ecutives of Universal Studios
and its parent company,
MCA, are Jewish.
In a letter published last
week by the Ecumenical
Press Service in Geneva,
Maximov said his remarks
were in no way intended to be
anti- Semitic, and that he was
"sorry for the anxiety that his
statement had caused his
Jewish brothers and reas-
sures them of his high esteem
and love."
