drive to put the issue on the
ballot. Now they are doing
mass-mailings of information,
fund-raising and providing
speakers to interested groups.
Each side claims that
voting their way will save
money. The anti-Proposal A
side points out that paying for
a live Medicaid birth is about
10 times as expensive as a
Medicaid abortion. They add
that the child will also be an
additional Medicaid burden.
Pro-Proposal A groups say
that refusing to pay for
Medicaid abortions helps to
lower the pregnancy rate of
poor women, because they
know they cannot get a safe,
legal abortion.
The availability of safe
abortions is another factor,
often raised by pro-
abortionists. They say that
many women who cannot get
a legal abortion will get an il-
legal, perhaps unsafe abor-
tion, resulting in injuries or
loss of life to many women.
Wanetik adds, "If the illegal
abortionist injures her, then
the medical bills for recover-
ing her health will be charg-
ed to Medicaid?'
A forum this Sunday will
present both religious and
secular opinions from each
side. Speaking against Pro-
posal A will be Jeanne Korsch
of the NCJW and Rabbi Paul
Yedwab of Temple Israel.
Speaking for Proposal A will
be Rabbi Goldberg and Diane
Fagelman, a registered nurse
and member of the Commit-
tee to End Tax-Funded Abor-
tions. Fagelman is not
Jewish.
The forum, sponsored by
the American Jewish Com-
mittee, will begin at 11 a.m.
at the United Hebrew Schools
Building. There is no admis-
sion charge.

Strasbourg, France (JTA) —
Pope John Paul II strongly
reiterated his condemnation
of anti-Semitism at a meeting
with Jewish leaders Sunday,
but made no response to re-
quests that the Vatican
recognize the state of Israel.
The pontiff, on an official
visit to Alsace, received a
local Jewish delegation at the
archbishop's residence, where
he spoke briefly on the need
for cooperation between
Christians and Jews.
He avoided answering a
plea made by Rene Gutman,
the Strasbourg chief rabbi, for
Vatican recognition of Israel
and the establishment of
diplomatic ties.
