and facists, including sym-
pathizers and collaborators of
Hitler's Third Reich, former
Nazis and even possible war
criminals?'
The report does not state
that Stella is anti-Semitic or
that he sympathizes with
Nazis.
Stella said his job as chair-
man of the National
Republican Heritage Groups
Council was to promote the
Republican Party. He said he
was not elected to the position
to investigate members of the
group.
Stella said he never heard
anti-Semitic comments from
members of the National
Republican Heritage Groups
Council. Perhaps, Stella said,
bigots would know better
than to make such remarks
around him.
"I get very disenchanted
with people who are anti-
American, anti-Semitic or
anti-religion," he said. "It's
just not in my -make-up to
work with them "
Individuals singled out in
the "Old Nazi" report include
Radi Slavoff, the Republican
Heritage Group Council's ex-
ecutive director, whom
Bellant alleges is a member
of a Bulgarian facist group;
Laszlo Pasztor, founding chair
of the Council who served in
a pro-Nazi Hungarian party
during World War II; Nicolas
Nazarenko, said to be active
with pro-Nazi elements in the
United States and who told
Bellant that Jews are his
"ideological enemy"; and
Florian Galdau, former head
of the Romanian Republican
unit of the Council, who was
identified by the Simon
Wiesenthal Center as a
member of the pro-Nazi
Romanian Iron Guard during
World War II.
All of the individuals singl-
ed out in the report were
working for the George Bush
for President campaign.
Officials for the Bush cam-
paign said Galdau was fired
when they learned of his pro-
Nazi sympathies. But Galdau
said last week he has not
stepped down from the
campaign.
Last month, other Bush
campaign workers, including
Slavoff, Pasztor and Philip
Guarino, former Republican
National Committee adviser
on senior citizens affairs and
member of the Italian
Heritage Council, resigned
after reports surfaced of their
alleged bigotry.
The report links Stella, na-
tional chairman of the
Italian-American Committee
for Bush-Quayle, with
Guarino. Author Bellant
claims that Guarino helped

secure Stella's position as
head of the Republican
Heritage Groups Council.
Stella said Guarino is "no
way, shape or form anti-
anything. He is an honorable,
honest man and one of the
best Americans I have ever
met."
Bellant charges that
Guarino is an honorary
member of the P-2 Lodge of
Italy, which in the early
1970s planned to overthrow
the Italian government and
establish a dictatorship.
Members of the Republican
Heritage Groups Council
have made their mark in the
U.S. government in a more
subtle manner, Bellant says.
In his report, he says that

All of the
individuals singled
out in the report
were working for
the George Bush
campaign.

numerous Nazi sympathizers
entered the American
political scene in the late
1950s. The report suggests
they found their niche in the
Republican Party, which was
focusing its efforts on
anti-communism.
Bellant also says the Nazi
sympathizers banded into the
Republican Heritage Groups
Council which President
Richard Nixon appointed as a
permanent council with the
party in 1969.
According to Bellant,
members of the Council are
keenly interested in foreign
policy — an area in which he
says they hold great
influence.
For example, he says the
Coalition for Peace Through
Strength, established in 1978
by the American Security
Council, a conservative think
tank, has attracted numerous
extremist groups.
One of these groups is the
National Confederation of
American Ethnic Groups
(NCAEG), which Bellant call-
ed "an organizational forum
for, and dominated by, Nazi
collaborationists, emigre
fascists and anti-Semites."
Two men who have been ac-
tive in the NCAEG, Bellant
says, are Walter Melianovich
and Nicholas Nazarenko who,
like other members of the
Republican Heritage Groups
Council, discussed with him
their opposition to the Office
of Special Investigations, the
Justice Department's anti-
Nazi unit.
Melianovich, Bellant says,
told him, "The damn OSI is
hounding my friends."
Melianovich is the head of the
Byelorussian-American
