B'not Mitzvah

Sharone Shamir, daughter
of Zivit and Samuel Shamir,
and Jae-Jae Spoon, daughter
of Karen and Jeffrey Spoon,
will twin the observance of
their b'not mitzvah celebra-
tion Saturday at Mat Shalom
Synagogue with Anna Latin-
sky, daughter of Olga and
Iosef Latinsky of Leningrad,
USSR.
Family pressure has caused
grave hardship for Latinsky,
a graphic artist, and his wife,
Olga, a mathematics teacher.
The Latinskys began to
gather all the necessary
documents for applyng for ex-
it visas in August 1979. At
that time, Mrs. Latinsky's
parents were very angry with
her for wanting to leave and
refused to give their written
consent. They demanded
money in compensation. So,
the couple had to pay her
parents 1,000 rubbles to ob-
tain written consent. In order
to raise the money, they had
to sell many of their personal
belongings.
Then Latinsky's parents
decided to demand similar
payment and the Latinskys
had to raise another 1,000
rubbles. Finally, in November
1979, the couple was able to
submit their visa application.
lb their dismay, they were
refused. Their telephone was
disconnected, and both were
fired from their jobs.
A year-and-a-half later, the
Latinskys submitted a second
application for exit visas.
They received a second
refusal within five days, due
to "insufficient kinship!' An
aunt in Israel was inade-
quate, not a first-degree
relative.
Sharone and Jae-Jae have
written to Anna and they will
attempt to reach the , family
by phone.
