Carole Glasser, production manager and Baltimore Times' "congeniality coor- dinator," known to the employees as "Our Spiritual Leader," got Rick and me to the BWI Airport in time .. . and none too soon as the Pied- mont Airlines doors were about to close. Almost forgot about Gene White, smiling cooperative 35-year-vet courier of the Baltimore Jewish Times .. . Rather than take us on a mundane ride along the ex- pressway enroute to the Em- bassy Suites, Gene gave Rick and me the "cook's tour" scenic route . . . houses with their famed marble steps, etc. The visit with Baltimore Jewish Times employees .. . seeing much of its operation and remodeling was an in- teresting pleasure. Hightlight of our trip, however, was seeing Harbor- place . . . The pictures I look- ed at taken prior to its being built showed a convincingly sorry sight . . . The streets are still Belgian brick and cob- blestone, but the change is like a miracle. The Baltimore Orioles and the Preakness, middle leg of horse-racing's triple crown, are still good reasons for sporting pride . . . even though the Orioles made such a poor showing this year .. . Just don't discuss the football Colts who stole away to In- dianapolis under cover of night in March 1985. The downtown restaurant scene . . . and overall environ- ment . . . seem to be benefit- ting from Baltimore's evolu- tion . . . Before Harborplace opened, not too many cared to come into the area . . . Now there are a lot more full- service dining, not just sand- wich shops and- coffee shops. Mention Baltimore and one thinks of steamed crabs, oysters and other fruits of the sea . . . To the Detroit Tigers, or any other American League team, playing the Baltimore Orioles in Balti- more also meant an adven- ture in seafood dining. But don't tell this to the Prime Rib on North Calvert Street or Tio Pepe's, near Harborplace, with its elegant Spanish cuisine, or Italian restaurants in the Little Ita- ly sector on North Charles Street along High Street east of Harborplace . . . or the boom of Oriental restaurants which have opened near Har- borplace . . . They also do a big share of the visitor trade. Harborplace has had a perfect marriage with the ci- ty . . . and the millions of visitors each year are happy guests of this joyful wedding. Glad to finally have met you in person, Baltimore. WHAT BETTER way .. . and setting . . . to kick off the 1988-89 Michigan Opera. Theatre season than the re- cent Monday night at the opera setting of Vanelli's Downtown on Woodward. The rich baritone voice of Dino Valle plus Jan Rae's cultured soprano tones gave attendees a wealth of heavy opera and light standard favorites. Both songsters began at the balcony while a piano accom- panied them in Vannelli's lounge . . . From there they went to the piano and stroll- ed about both lounge and din- ing room with many recognizable arias. Vanelli's Downtown seats 40 in the lounge and 130 in its main dining room . . . Dante Vanelli also joins in on many numbers to trio with Jan and Dino. On this Monday, plus the Michigan Opera Theatre kickoff, the lounge was taken over by Dr. Jerry Bloom . . . to celebrate the birthday of his wife Joan. Dante and Penny Vanelli present Dixieland . . . quite a contrast . . . on Wednesday evenings . . . with some of the town's major stars. MICHIGAN OPERA Theatre opens its 1988-89 season tonight, number 18 . . . with The Ballad of Baby Doe . . . an auspicious occa- sion since it will also be MOT's 500th public performance. This weekend at Fisher Theatre will include a number of "opening night festivities" including a pre- performance hoe down this evening beginning 7:30 p.m., half-hour before curtain .. . It'll be in the Fisher Theatre arcade . . . Each evening, 16 dancers and a professional caller will get together for a real country/western dance . . . appropriate for the open- ing scene of Baby Doe. Next two performances by Michigan Opera Theater are true blockbusters . . . Especially Steven Sondheim's and James Goldman's Follies, which replaced Kiss Me Kate . . . and comes to the Michigan Opera Theater Oct. 21-Nov. 6 with Juliet Pro- wsse, Edie Adams and Nancy Dussault . . . This will be the original, controversial 1971 version, not the tampered and revamped one. Dates for Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Pensance are Nov. 11-20.
