I

n Crossing Delancey the
pickle man might be
trying to win Amy Irv-
ing's heart, but the "bubbie,"
beautifully portrayed by
lifelong Yiddish stage actress,
Reizl Bozyk, is the character
who steals the audience's
heart.
Originally from Poland,
Bozyk's parents were actors
in Warsaw. She started out as
a four-year-old girl playing in
the Yiddish theater 70 years
ago. Bozyk's parents never
had to pay for the services of
a shadchen (matchmaker)
because she met her future
husband when she was 11
years old in the Yiddish
theater. She was married to
this fellow actor, Max Bozyk,
for 36 years.
She fondly recalls the old
days in the Yiddish theater.
"We used to play drama. I
played younger parts. At age
16 or 17 I started to play
adult roles. We toured all over
eastern Europe. Oh my God,
did we tour all over — in
Poland and Russia."
Being successful Yiddish
actors saved their lives, Bozyk
recalled. "We had left Poland
to play Buenos Aires in 1939.
We did not know that the war
would break out and had been
contracted to perform in
Argentina. They had four or
five Yiddish theaters at that
time and actors came from
even America to perform. One
of the American troupes had
a producer who engaged us to
come to New York. Thank
God we came to America in
1941 and did not go back to
Europe . . . She and her hus-
band arrived with their five
year old daughter.
