Le Pen's Front
Suffers Losses

Paris (JTA) — Jean-Marie
Le Pen's far-right-wing Na-
tional Front suffered a stun-
ning defeat in the regional
elections Sunday.
It scored a bare 5.26 percent
of the vote compared to the
nearly 15 percent it won in
France's presidential elec-
tions last April.
Even in Marseilles, the par-
ty's stronghold, the National
Front emerged with 18.19
percent, down more than 10
percent from its April
showing.
The dismal results greatly
reduced any chances the
center-right and Gaullist par-
ties would enter into some
sort of electoral alliance with
Le Pen's faction.

indifference by the world's na-
tions to the slaughter of inno-
cent Jews during the
Holocaust, the American
Jewish Congress called on the
Reagan Administration to
lead the nations of the world
in sanctions against Iraq for
the illegal use of poison gas
and other atrocities commit-
ted against the Kurds.
In a statement by
AJCongress President Robert
K. Lifton, he urged the ad-
ministration to halt federally
backed loan guarantees to
Iraq and ban oil imports from
that country.

Shamir Meets
With Kurds

Jerusalem (JTA) — Premier
Yitzhak Shamir met Tuesday
with four immigrants from
Kurdistan. He expressed
solidarity with the
"persecuted Kurdish people,"
who are "exposed to the
danger of annihilation."
Iraqi armed forces have
been accused at the United
Nations of using poison gas
against the Kurdish minority
in Iraq. Shamir said the Ira-
qis were trying to annihilate
the Kurds "by use of
murderous chemical
weapons."
