BACKGROUND: Sam Flam was born in
Enterprise, Ala., and came to Detroit at
age 2. He lived in many Jewish
neighborhoods with his parents, Charles
and Clara, and his brother, Chester.
As a youngster he spent many
summers in Alabama with his relatives.
After graduating from Central High
School in 1951, he attended Wayne
University. The following year he went
to Israel because of his affiliation with
Habonim as a teenager.
When he returned to Wayne, he kept
his contacts with Habonim, becoming a
camp counselor in upstate New York
and the leader of a Habonim unit. He
was offered a position as secretary of
the national organization of Habonim
but declined.
He met his wife Marilyn at
registration at Wayne. She was reading
the book he just finished — Teacher in
America. They have been married for 32
years.
He began teaching in Detroit but
was drafted five months later. He spent
almost two years in Texas. When the
family moved back to Detroit, he
continued his post-graduate education
while teaching. In 1968, he was
appointed the training chairman of the
Michigan-Ohio Regional Educational
Laboratory to improve the quality of
education.
In 1969, he was appointed director
of secondary education in Berkley. One
year later, he became deputy
superintendent, and in 1980, he was
appointed superintendent of schools.
Over the years he received many
professional awards including the
I/D/E/A Kettering Fellow Distinguished
Educator Award.
As superintendent, Flam is proud
that Berkley is one of the most
innovative districts, even though it has
a limited budget compared to
neighboring districts.
Berkley has attracted funding from
the federal and state government. "At
one time, we had the highest number of
grants awarded per capita in the state
of Michigan." His district was
instrumental in adapting Madeline
Hunter's theories into the classroom as
a model for the state.
Beginning next week, Flam will
leave his post as superintendent and
become director of Manley
Communications Group in Southfield.
His new position includes working with
Walsh College to direct a center for the
development of administrators for the
non-profit sector.
"It's difficult to leave a profession
that I've had for 32 years for something
which is unknown. I look forward to it
as a challenge."
