In addition, the adult education committee, chaired by Dr. Mark Goldberg, will offer the Alef Bet classes for adults who wish to learn to read Hebrew, follow the Sabbath service and recite prayers. Shaarey Zedek faculty for the Institute for Adult Jewish Studies includes Rabbis Irwin Groner and William Gershon. The guest faculty includes Aviva Silverman, who receiv- ed her master's degree in Jewish education from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America; Itzy Weisberg, a Jewish composer and assis- tant professor in the Midrasha College of Jewish Studies; and Renee Wohl, a United Hebrew Schools teacher and former director of the Midrasha. The courses will be taught from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tues- day evenings Oct. 25 through Dec. 13. Classes to be of- fered include "Emet Ve'Emunah: Statement of Principles of Conservative Judaism," "Family Ties: Parenting and Jewish Values," "The 20th Century Miracle: Israel's Revival and Rebirth: 1896-1948," "Back to the Source: Psychological and Literary Insights into Biblical Personalities," "The Wisdom of the Sages," "Life in the Balance," "A Time to Live, A Time to Die," "Tutorial in Synagogue Skills" and "Beyond the Garden of Eden: Rabbinic In- sights into the Book of Bereshit." Two sections will be offered Intermarriage Workshop Set The Birmingham Temple and the School for Human Relations will present "The Intermarriage Workshop" at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13, 20 and 27. The workshop, which will be led by Chuck Kramer and Judy Schneider, will be held at the Birmingham Temple. Individuals contemplating intermarriage, couples involv- ed in intermarriage, parents of intermarried children and offspring of intermarriages may be especially interested in the workshop. Prenatal Event At Temple Israel Temple Israel will present from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Oct. 16 "Bagels and Babies," a program for expectant parents and those thinking about their first child, or those wishing to refresh their knowledge. The program, featuring Rabbis M. Robert Syme, Harold Loss and Paul Yedwab, along with social worker Janice Tracht and pediatri- cian Dr. Daniel A. Schnaar, will discuss Jewish rituals surrounding birth (including baby naming) and newborn care and the adjustments that occur when a couple becomes a family. Refuseniks To Come Here Former Soviet refuseniks Ari and Mila Volvovsky will be honored at an 8 p.m. recep- tion Wednesday at Congrega- tion Beth Shalom. The public is invited to the reception which will include Detroit-area relatives of the Volvovskys, Marty and Rita Westin, Cindy Franklin and Howard Westin and their families. Rabbi David Nelson and Oak Park Mayor Charlotte Rothstein will speak at the gathering. Congregation Beth Shalom adopted Ari and Mila Volvov- sky and their daughter, Kira, in 1980 and worked for their release until last spring when the Volvovskys emigrated to Israel.
