U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and
Donald Riegle will be the
guest speakers at Sunday's 10
a.m. cornerstone laying on
the site of the new 150-unit
apartment building being
constructed by Jewish Federa-
tion Apartments, Inc.
The new building is being
built through a $6.7 million
commitment from the U.S.
Department of Housing and
Urban Development. Sens.
Levin and Reigle, along with
Oak Park Mayor Charlotte
Rothstein, were instrumental
in obtaining the funds.
Dr. Hershel Sandberg, presi-
dent of JFA, announced this
week that the new building
will be named in memory of
Ben and Harriett Teitel two
longtime supporters of ser-
vices to the elderly.
Together with his wife's
family, the Mendelsons, Ben
Teitel was owner and operator
of Mendelson's Atlantic
Resort in South Haven for
many years. Mrs. Teitel died
in 1964, and Mr. Teitel in
1985. Under the terms of his
will, Mr. Teitel established a
charitable trust that will go
toward the construction.
After selling his interest in
Mendelson's Atlantic in 1964,
Mr. Teitel became a developer
and operator of apartments
throughout western
Michigan. A native of Detroit,
he maintained many close
ties here and was a supporter
of the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, Jewish Home for Aged,
Hillel Day School and Jewish
Vocational Service.
The new builidng is being
constructed east of the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Building of
the Jewish Community
Center driveway. Along with
the 1-696 decks, also current-
ly under construction, the
apartments were considered
compensation to Oak Park
and Southfield for the homes
and apartments taken by the
freeway.
The deck immediately
behind the Center and Teitel
apartments will have a
"passive park" containing
walking paths, benches and a
small play area, and it will
allow pedestrian access from
the heavily Jewish neighbor-
hoods north of the freeway to
the Orthodox synagogues
along 10 Mile Road. Comple-
tion of both the building and
the deck is expected in the
fall of 1989.
The cornerstone laying will
also feature remarks by
Mayor Rothstein, Jack Robin-
son representing the Jewish
Welfare Federation and

the leadership of Eva Meister,
will sing the national
anthems.
Plans for creating a 10 Mile
Jewish Community Campus
to include the three Jewish
Federation Apartments
buildings, the Jimmy Prentis
Morris Building of the Jewish
Community Center and the
Neighborhood Project are
underway as well. A new
divided boulevard entrance
drive is expected to be com-
pleted this fall.

wine. Committee members in-
clude Dr. Sandberg, Gerald 0.
