The program, titled Project Discovery, will enable students to spend six months in Israel studying in an American high school. They will live in Jerusalem and experience life in Israel. The Youth Aliyah Depart- ment of the Jewish Agency will administer the program in Israel. Participating students will depart in February 1989 and will live and study in Golds- tein Youth Village, an inter- national education center. Detroit students will be join- ed by students from Chicago, Cleveland and other North American Jewish com- munities. About 40 boys and girls are expected to take part in Project Discovery, 15 from Detroit. The Detroit Jewish Welfare Federation will sub- sidize the cost for each stu- dent from Detroit. The cost for the semester will be $2,735 inclusive: room and board, tuition, roundtrip air- fare from Chicago. In addition to the regular American high school cur- riculum, the program will in- clude intensive Jewish and Hebrew studies and tours of the country. A special em- phasis will be given to learn- ing about the Israeli society and encountering the Israelis on a personal level. Each student will have an adoptive Israeli family with which the student will spend holidays and free time. Students will also take part in activities of the Noar Le'Noar youth movement (BBYO - Israeli sister move- ment) with their peers. Deadline for registration is Oct. 15.
