Halachah Hotline
Begun By NCSY
The National Conference of
Synagogue youth has begun
a 24-hour Halachah Hotline.
Members of the community
will be able to call the special
hotline number and receive
information on Shabbat, up-
coming holidays, as well as a
short D'var Halachah, (a
thought relating to a point of
Jewish law). In addition,
callers will have the _oppor-
tunity to ask any type of ques-
tion relating to Judaism.
All questions will be col-
lected on a daily basis and
submitted to qualified rabbis
who will answer queries bas-
ed on Torah thought and law.
Responses will then be sent to
callers within a 24-hour
period.
In the case of more pressing
questions, callers will receive
a phone call allowing them to
discuss their particular issue.
All calls and questions will be
dealt with with privacy and
discretion and are strictly
confidential.
Rabbi Mark Cohn, NCSY
regional director, said the
hotline number is (313)
96-TORAH.
The Senior YIT/NCSY
chapter will have a horseback
riding outing on Oct. 9. On
Oct. 13-16, members of the
YIT/NCSY chapter go to a
Regional Shabbaton in In-
dianapolis, Ind. The theme for
the weekend is "Does Rambo
Need Tzitzit? A Look at
Jewish Hero-Q." For informa-
tion, call - . 'pter adviser
Stuart Sal .wiess, 557-1471;
or the regional NCSY office
967-3300.

Portugal To
Improve Ties
With Israel
Paris (JTA) — Portugal will
soon upgrade its diplomatic
representation in Israel.
President Mario Soares of
Portugal told Israeli Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres last
week a resident ambassador
to Israel will be appointed "in
a matter of months!'
Portugal currently has a
non-resident ambassador ac-
credited to Israel. Israel
maintains a full diplomatic
mission in Lisbon, headed by
a career foreign service of-
ficial with the rank of am-
bassador.
Peres met with Soares
before flying to the United
Nations in New York for
meetings with President
Reagan and Egyptian Foreign
Minister Meguid.
