While most of her genera-
tion stresses function, profit
and the bottom line above all
else, Gordon defends another
sensibility: that art has in-
trinsic value — even if that
value cannot always be quan-
tified — and the artist is a
valuable, even necessary, con-
tributor to society.
"Art is really a necessity for
society," she said. "Art can be
a healing thing, or something
you have to think about. It's
all really about seeing things
in ways you haven't seen
them before."
