Butzel Awardees Avern Cohn
and his father, the late Irwin I. Cohn

Each year, the Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award for Distin-
guished Community Service honors an individual who has
demonstrated extraordinary leadership and devotion to the
Jewish community and the city of Detroit.

Now in its 37th year, the award bears the name of
a man whose career of voluntarism was legendary.

As a federal judge, Avern L. Cohn is universally respected
for his knowledge of the law. As former president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation and supporter of many im-
portant community causes, he is regarded for his commit-
ment to the Jewish People.
In both areas of endeavor—especially in his quiet acts of
generosity and in his efforts to build communal harmony—
Judge Cohn fulfills the high ideals that guide the selection of
a Butzel Awardee:
• Length of service to the Jewish community
• Service to the total Jewish community and its
constituent parts
• Service in the general commmunity as a repre-
sentative of the Jewish community
• Character and integrity in communal affairs
