The Jewish Welfare Federation is the central organization of the Jewish community of metro- politan Detroit. Mal Yisrael—the oneness of the People Israel. It's an age-old Jewish concept that speaks of mutual responsibility and the strengthening of Jewish life. Of continuity and of vision. Operating as a voluntary body and guided by Jewish values, Federation is dedicated to the en- hancement and survival of Jewish life at home and abroad. Working together throughout 1988, thousands of citizens of the Jewish community of Detroit demonstrated their understanding of Mal Yisrael. They rejoiced together and sometimes grieved together. They gave of themselves and their resources so that others might have a better life today and for the future. Together with its agencies, Fe- deration identifies needs within the Jewish community and co- ordinates planning, budgeting, fund-raising and advocacy to meet those needs. Some gave an extra measure. Hundreds of volunteers participated in meetings of Federation budgeting divisions, committees and task forces— seeking ways to meet the requirements of the organization, its agencies and beneficiaries. Hundreds sat on Federation agency boards, addressing the needs of the aged, of young people and of families in trouble—supported, as always, by those volunteers who bring a hot meal, a caring word and a taste of Yiddishkeit to those who are alone or suffering. aat tfit gigga deAmees - (tAt /01} -tfvfiv, hut And, finally, there were the hundreds of Allied Jewish Campaign and Federated Endowment Fund workers who understood that promises can be fulfilled only if we have the financial resources to do so. Out of their own com- mitment, they moved others to share. Whatever their contribution, all of these people enabled our community to meet its responsibility.
