Group Protests
Holocaust
Memorial Site

Bonn (JTA) — About 200
Jews and non-Jews called on
the Frankfurt municipality
Thursday to replace an air
raid shelter built by the Nazis
with a Holocaust memorial
and museum along the lines
of the Yad Vashem in Jerusa-
lem.
The group protested plans
by the city fathers to rebuild
the shelter at the Friedberger
Anlage, the site of Frank-
furt's largest synagogue until
it was destroyed during Kris-
tallnacht, or night of the
broken glass, on Nov. 9-10,
1938.
That night is considered the
first organized pogrom
against German and Aus-
trian Jews.
Abraham Dzialowski, one of
the protestors, observed that
"only a few memorial tablets
remind us in Frankfurt of the
pogrom and other events
leading to the Holocaust!'
He said the site of what was
once the biggest synagogue is
better suited for a memorial,
not a shelter.
The matter will be raised
when Chancellor Helmut
Kohl comes to Frankfurt Nov.
9 to deliver a speech marking
the 50th anniversary of
Kristallnacht.

Second Shul
Gutted; Arson
Not Reported

New York (JTA) — A second
synagogue in Brooklyn was
gutted by fire last Saturday,
but fire and police officials
say there is no evidence of ar-
son.
Rabbi Solomon Friedman,
82, of Congregation Chuna
David, and his wife, Gizella,
80, were hospitalized for foot
burns. The couple fled their
living quarters on the second
floor of the building that
housed the synagogue.
According to Fire Marshall
Denis Guardiano, a short cir-
cuit, candles or a gas stove
that was left burning over-
night ignited the blaze.
The 70-family Orthodox
congregation is located on
Ocean Parkway, about half-a-
mile from Sharai Torah,
which was vandalized and
torched by arsonists during
the early hours of Sept. 17.
Two juveniles were arrested
a day later, in connection
with that incident, and
reportedly confessed to that
crime.
Unlike the case in Sharai
Torah, there was no evidence
of break-in and no graffiti.
